RBA Forum Implementing RBA The journey so far…..

Outcomes % of attendees understanding the principles and challenges of implementing RBA into programs % with a clearer definition of their relevant program outcome they seek

Some pointers THERE IS NO PERFECT TIME TO START! THERE IS NO PERFECT TEMPLATE! KNOW YOUR PROGRAM GOAL CLEARLY! THINK LONG TERM – DATA TAKES TIME!!!!

LCC Aged Care Approximately 1000 beds in QLD Consumer Directed Care Packages Residential Aged Care and Retirement Living

LCC COMMUNITY SERVICE A SMALLER PART OF LCC BUT HIGHLY DIVERSE 3 KEY STREAMS – DISABILITY, MENTAL HEALTH, YOUTH AND FAMILY OVER 20 PROGRAMS FEED INTO THIS (E.g. 24/7 support, mental health outreach) CHALLENGE: HOW DO WE DEMONSTRATE THAT OUTCOMES ARE OCCURRING AND REFLECT OUR STRATEGIC DIRECTION?

The Sector until now Not for profit and NGO sector has been immersed in prescribed outputs Govt policy shift(Social Services Reform QLD State Govt 2014) Govt and prospective partners are looking for Innovation Measurable impact Sustainable projects

It’s a mindset shift The process of adopting RBA is a change management challenge No buy in = no data! LCC approach from 2 ends. Top Down and Bottom up Sustained change

Get buy in !!!!!

Find your champions Mark Friedman book disseminated to team Look for team members with a natural affinity with this. Its not everyone’s cup of tea.

Understand your program’s ultimate objective No really………. UNDERSTAND IT! 30 seconds to describe it Example GAP INITIATIVE: Mental Health To provide individuals with mental health, discharged from hospital, case management to achieve independent living.

Workshop it Site managers & key team leaders 101 training. LCC 2 nd day to look at applying 101 to specific programs. Follow up in-house workshop to ensure program outcomes are clear and measures are realistic. Exec 101 session to ensure buy in from influencers. Both levels see the benefit and logic behind tracking clear measures = a sustainable change to the culture of the organisation.

Map it Single program or multiple programs feeding into a strategic vision. Keep the goals simple. Frontline program Program stream Organisationa l performance StrategicStreamProgram Stream e.g. disability Program

Build it

Measure it

Track and Act

Interrogate the information

Look for relationships

Persistence Ensure frontline teams have means and ability to capture your measures Question the data. Is this real? Is there an error? Ensure the questions are realistic and achievable Have you got benchmarks already or is this a new measure? Some goals may not be relevant enough or achievable – Don’t drown yourself in data. Sometimes LESS is MORE. LIFELINE Use Social impact measure $1 invested is an $8 return to the community.

Review and Evaluate Always reflect on the outcome. Is this telling you something meaningful? Do you need to put new measures in that are more aligned to clients you work with? Does the data reflect your operational objectives?

Where to from here for LCC?

Thankyou
