The savanna By Aqeelah welsh and Sahana kanabar

Where???? where can someone find the savanna? You can find the savanna in parts of Africa, India, Northern Australia and South America.

What???? What is the savanna? The savanna is a Grassland covered with shrubs and trees. The savanna grass can grow up to 1-2 meters high (which is a lot) The tropical latitudes, 30 degrees south and north of the equator. The summer is about 6-8 months and is really wet the rainfall comes up to 130 cm nna/

The rain collects into water holes which is vital to the animals that live there. In the winter it is very dry and the trees are very flammable so sometimes there can be wild fires.

Plants. Baobab is found in Africa and India and mostly around the equator. This plant can grow up to 25 meters tall it can live for thousand years.. It looks like it was planted upside down and is leafless for 9 months. Water gets stored in it thick, corky, fire resistant trunk.. The bark is used for cloth, rapes and the leaves are used for condiments, medicine and fruit.. A source of food called “monkey bread” is also made from the fruit.

The umbrella thorn acacia is a plant that grows in the sand dunes or rocky grounds. This plant needs little water and can survive on only 4cm of rain It can withstand day temperatures of 122 degrees and below freezing at night. The branches are shaped kind of like a crown or umbrella. This plant, Kangaroo Paws, only grows in the Australian savanna. It has green furry leaves that grow to 10cm. The stem is red and can grow to be a meter long. Birds love to perch on this plant. Honey eaters and Wattle birds pollinate it.

Animals The ostrich is the worlds largest bird it is flightless but is an extremely fast runner. At two meters tall, with a stride of three to five meters, it can sprint at 70 kilo meters at an hour. The wings are used as rudders to change direction. It has two toed foot with long claws. A single kick can kill a human or lion. 10/24/content_ htm

The rhino is the second biggest land mammal. In Africa their name is “welt” which means wide. Rhino live solitary. Their huge horns grow to 122 cm. The species is seriously endangered.

Zebras are a member of the horse family and live in large herds. Some herds will even number up to tens of thousands. Their markings are a distinctive black and white stripe pattern.

Human Activities Tourism is very important income to the people of Africa but could it be doing more harm than good? Poachers are cutting the rhino and elephant populations in half during their greedy search for tusks and horns. The animals horns and tusks are made from a expensive, natural material called ivory.

Tourism Tourism is some countries main income. Some of the sites are for paleontology. Tourists don’t have as much respect for the land they are staying on. Indigenous people have been greatly changed by tourists. With all the vehicles that tourists use grass is worn done which means animals sometimes starve.

Poaching Elephants and rhinos have been killed mercilessly for their tusks and horns. When they are killed the body is just left with the ivory cut off. Poaching is illegal with serious consequences. Because of poaching some species such as the black rhino are very close to extinction.
