POWER POINT BY: KM Moose Heavy Headed

INTRODUCTION Scientific name of a moose is Alces alces Moose are mammals There are four different kinds of moose the Alasken, Western,Shias, and the European moose

Physical Features Moose have fleshy flexible lips this helps them move food into their mouths Moose have a long clanging patch of skin under there chin called a bell Moose cannot see nearby objects easily They can turn their ears in the direction of the sound to help them hear more clearly

Physical Features Moose legs need to hold up a great deal of weight Moose have very powerful legs with wide flat hooves The shape of the hoof spreads the weight of the moose so it can walk on snow or uneven ground

Moose Lifespan Moose can live more than twenty years in the wild Few live more than twelve years They are not a endangered species

Habitat And Climate Moose prefer to live in the northern areas or at high elevations They are mainly found in forested areas theese include the foothills of North Americas mountain ranges, forests in New England and Acadia, and the boreal forests of Canada and Alaska They enjoy being near lakes, rivers, and muskegs Sometimes they will venture into the tundra this place is snowy It is a very harsh climate The tempiture can be below 70

Food Moose are herbivores that means they only eat plant A healthy adult moose needs to eat about 44 pounds [20 kg] of food per day In North America moose will eat 221 types of plants In spring and summer, moose eat leaves and shoots Water plants are a favorite of a moose

Prey and Predators A moose has predators such as bears, wolves, coyotes, eagles, ravens, people, and other meat eaters Native Americans who lived in the northern woodlands used bows and arrows and killed more moose then they needed Moose are herbivores they do not have prey

Behavior Most moose are gentle animals, but they can be dangerous A female moose will charge if it is protecting its calves Moose that have been feed by people come to except food they might attack the next person they come across with no food for this reason it is illegal in many places to feed moose

Reproduction Calves are born weighing about 35 pounds [16 kg] They grow up very quickly, gaining as much as 2 pounds [1 kg] per day Calves can swim within 3 days of their birth They can out run a human before they are one week old Calves follow their mother closely for about 5 months, they will feed on her milk Only a couple moose born a year survive

Physical Adaptations Moose have to toed hooves this helps them to walk on snow or uneven ground Moose have thick brown coats this helps them because they can survive in temps as cold as minus 70 Moose have ears that can stand up to hear noise better

Behavioral Adaptations Moose live alone most of the winter, but sometimes in winter they gather in small groups to find food female moose send a call so bull know they have interest in mating if 2 bulls hear her they end up having a fight but the weaker one backs down and the stronger 1 is now going to have a family

Physiological Adaptations Moose can hold their breath underwater for as long as 1 minute And moose like all dear, are ruminants they have four separate pouches moose they need this extra stomach to digest food They don’t chew their food thearoly later when they go to lay down they re chew it

Fun Facts In many parts of Europe moose are called elk in North America elk is given to another member of the deer family The word moose is a Algonquian Indian word for “twig eater” Some people are afraid of moose but they are more afraid of you then you are about you

End Good bye
