Moose

2 Where do they Live? Page 1 Moose live in the Arctic, North America and Eurasia. Moose often live near lakes and streams.

3 Facts about moose... Page 1 Moose are part of the deer family.
A male moose can weigh as much as 1,200 pounds.  A female moose has no antlers. A moose can be up to six feet tall.

5 Moose Antlers… Page 2 The antlers of a moose can take seven years to grow to their full size. In the winter, the male moose’s antlers shed, or fall off. In the spring, the antlers grow back.

The moose has split hooves for feet, like deer. The moose has long legs which help it to reach high into the trees for food.

Moose have large brown eyes, but they have poor sight. Moose have large ears and can hear better than we can. The moose has a good sense of smell. He can smell other animals from far away before he can see them. Moose like water, and are very good swimmers.

Moose will go into the water to escape danger and to get away from pesky insects.

9 What do moose eat? Page 4 Moose like to eat juicy green leaves, twigs and plants. Their favorite food is water lilies. During the winter, when there are no leaves moose will eat twigs and bark. A moose may eat pounds of twigs each day. The word moose is an Indian word that means “twig eater”.

During the winter the moose will grow two layers of fur to keep warm. Moose mostly live alone, except when mothers raise their calves.

12 Moose Babies Page 5 In the spring, a mother moose will find a safe place to give birth her babies. The babies are called calves. A calf can weigh 22 to 35 pounds when they are born. A moose calf can walk and swim when it is three days old. Calves live with their mother for two years before they wander off on their own.

Moose use their long legs to kick at enemies, such as wolves, that may try to attack their calves. Moose may live up to twenty years.
