ENERGY By:.
Energy is said to be the ability to do work. That means the ability to make something happen. By “happen” it means to make things move or change condition.
Kinetic and Potential Energy have many forms. 1. Mechanical Energy - Energy associated with motion or position.
Forms of Energy. Nature of Energy Energy is the ability to do work. If an object or organism does work, then it uses energy. Work is the use of a force.
ENERGY Two main types -- kinetic and potential. KINETIC ENERGY Energy of motion Increases as mass increases Increases as speed increases.
Energy Transfer & Transformations How does energy impact the motion of an object?
ENERGY Ability to do work or cause change. Potential Stored energy. Has the ability to move. It might move, it might not move.

Presentation transcript:

Energy is the ability to cause change or do WORK. WORK is to make something MOVE by applying FORCE to it. There are 7 Types of Energy that can cause things to MOVE, or do WORK.

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can change form. THE LAW OF CONSERVATION OF ENERGY

The 7 Forms of Energy can be remembered using this acronym: AC HELMS

ATOMIC/NUCLEAR ENERGY the energy created when the NUCLEUS of ATOMS join together or split apart. ACHELMS It is also the energy used in nuclear bombs and nuclear power plants to produce electricity.

Burning chemicals in fuel to make heat Using chemicals in batteries to operate a toy Digestion of chemicals in food to give things energy ACHELMS CHEMICAL ENERGY the energy stored in a substance that is released during a chemical reaction.

HEAT/THERMAL ENERGY is the energy of the particles (atoms) that make up an object. The faster the particles move the more heat/THERMAL energy that is created. AC HELMS HEAT

ELECTRICAL ENERGY: the energy of moving ELECTRONS. Electrons moving through the wires of radios, TVs, lights and all electrical appliances are examples of electrical energy. AC HELMS

LIGHT/RADIANT ENERGY: Energy that travels in waves and can move through empty space. Light/radiant energy is often visible like sunlight, starlight and electrical lights. AC HELMS STARS

MECHANICAL ENERGY the energy of MOVING objects. Any MOTION or MOVING object has mechanical energy (potential & kinetic energy combined) AC HELMS riding a bike hitting a hammer a spinning windmill

SOUND ENERGY the energy of vibrations that can move through solids, liquids or gases. Cannot move through empty space. A guitar string vibrates to make sound. Vocal chords vibrate make sound. These vibrations cause the air particles to vibrate. AC HELMS

ALL 7 Forms of Energy can be either POTENTIAL OR KINETIC A guitar string being pulled back is potential sound energy. When the guitar string is released, it is changed to kinetic sound energy.

A CHANGE in one type of energy to another is called an ENERGY TRANSFORMATION
