Information processing

Whiting’s Model Key points Display – the surroundings or environment. Stimuli – the aspect of the display which the player is attending to. Sensory & receptor system – the part of the CNS which passes information from the sense organs to the brain. Perceptual mechanism – the process by which the interpretation of stimuli takes place. Decision & translatory mechanism – the process which deals with receiving the interpretation of the input & using the memory of previous similar situations to decide upon a response.

Effector mechanism – on the basis of the decision made, a motor plan or programme is constructed which informs the muscles of the movement requirements. Muscular system – the nerves & muscles which are involved in the particular movement. Response – the movement which results from the whole information – processing sequence. Intrinsic feedback – information about the movement provided by proprioception. Extrinsic feedback – information about the outcome of the response.

Task Draw and explain Whiting’s processing model. As well as being able to explain them using a practical example.

Task The information – processing theory sheds light on the actual processes that take place during the learning of motor skills. Whiting’s model is a well-known illustration of the information theory. Input data comes from the display. What is meant by the term display? (1) Identify the 3 main receptor systems used by performer in a named motor skill. (3) Explain why kinaesthetic feedback is so important to gymnasts. (6) 2. Outline Whiting’s model of information processing and explain how the perceptual mechanism can affect the performance of physical activities (6)
