KEY (IMPORTANT) WORD OR PHRASE QUOTATION HONORS ENGLISH 10

We have a problem! Sophia and Bobby are on the phone arguing with one another. They both want to use a quotation from The Once and Future King in an essay they’re writing for Mr. Stad, but they can’t decide how they should punctuate it. The argument rages deep into the night. Lines are tested. Feelings are hurt. Hearts are broken. They need our help!

The Problem Escalates!

Both of them have decided that they want to mention particular word choice used by T. H. White. They both want to use this sentence from page 14 :  “He was a hero worshiper.” However, they want to address his use of the blue word above to discuss how important this particular word is in the passage. Help them! Write a sentence that integrates ONLY the blue word of the above quotation. Do your best!

KEY WORD OR PHRASE QUOTATION A “key” word or phrase quotation is a method to include important details or terms from the text you’re quoting. We’re not talking about a sentence quotation. The quoted phrase should not be able to stand on its own.

BLENDING QUOTATIONS Key words and phrases have different punctuation than sentence quotations, so be careful. These phrases still require inline citation.

END OF SENTENCE In key word and phrase quotations, we do NOT need a comma before the quotation. Mr. Stadnycki skipped to Honors 10 English “with much vigor and excitement” (Funk 34). Take away quotation marks – does it work?

USE AT END OF SENTENCE WITH AUTHOR Notice! We do NOT need a comma before the quotation. When you use the author’s name in your quotation introduction, remove them from your citation: In his book, Mr. Holloran suggests to readers that students “revere Mr. Stadnycki as the Greeks did their gods” (34).

MIDDLE OF A SENTENCE When using a quotation in the middle of a sentence, there are no commas needed on either side of the quotation. Mr. Holloran goes on to write that “kind, cherubic” English classes drive Mr. Stadnycki to unbridled joy (84).

EXCLAMATION POINTS When YOUR SOURCE’S word or phrase ends with an exclamation point, you must include the exclamation inside the quotation mark, as it is part of the author’s writing. You still need to end your sentence with a period after the citation. As a result, your sentence will have double punctuation.

EXCLAMATION -POINTS Notice the double punctuation in the first example! Mr. Stadnycki suggested that all the students were loving his “sweet, sweet presentation!” (Holloran 30). There is a logic to this! THINK! Where does YOUR sentence end?

…AND QUESTION MARKS  A KWPQ can not include a question mark from your author. Why?  If YOUR sentence is a question, place ending punctuation after the quotation and your question mark after the citation.  What is the purpose of rocking if you can’t “rock their socks” (Stadnycki 253)?

The Steps 1.choose a dynamic/expressive word or phrase to quote (less than a full sentence in your source) 2.blend the quoted words with your own words to create one complete sentence 3.yes, the quoted words may be placed at the beginning, middle, or end of the sentence. 4.place quotation marks around the quoted words

The Steps (con’t) 5.TEST your sentence for fluency  (How would you do this?) 6.Place the citation at the end of the sentence and inside the end punctuation of the sentence 7.EXCEPTION: in sentences ending in a question mark or an exclamation mark, the citation is placed after the question mark or the exclamation mark, and a period is placed after the citation.
