Setting Essay Student Sample Imagine living in a small, southern town during The Great Depression when “a day was twenty-four hours long but seemed longer” (5) and gossip spreads like wild fire. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a book that takes place in the 1930s and follows two young children, Jem and Scout, as they live their day to day life; getting into trouble, being forced to live up to the families’ expectations, and messing around with the town superstitions. All of these things, however, depend a great deal on the setting. It creates a picture in one’s mind and really helps one get a feel of the book and what is going on. Maycomb County, Alabama is a very sluggish, very poor, and very gossipy town. “Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square” (5). Scout explains this while talking about the town she has grown up in her entire life. Maycomb County is in southern Alabama, and hotter than anyone can imagine. “There are no clearly defined seasons in South Alabama; summer drifts into autumn, and autumn is sometimes never followed by winter,but turns to a days-old spring that melts into summer again” (59). Adding The Great Depression to this weather creates a lot of tired, sluggish people. Not only people, but even the buildings and houses are sluggish and sagging. This is primarily because there is no money to do anything with them. “There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to but it with, nothing to see outside the boundaries of Maycomb County” (5). Along with being sluggish, Maycomb could not be poorer, and there was nothing that could be done about it. “Atticus said professional people were poor because the farmers were poor. As Maycomb County was farm country, nickels and dimes were hard to come by for doctors and dentists and lawyers” (21). However, people still worked and went to school, returning them back to the normalcy of any other town. “During his first five years in Maycomb, Atticus practiced economy more than anything; for several years thereafter he invested his earnings in his brother’s education” (5). Atticus Finch is the father of Jem and Scout and raises them on his own while still dealing with the stress of his work. Jem and Scout both go to school, but being older; Jem is a bit more mature in knowing how it works. “The second grade was grim, but Jem assured me that the older I got the better school would be, that he started off the same way, and it was not until one reached the sixth grade that one learned anything of value” (59). People in Maycomb live the best way that they can. With Maycomb County seeming so dull and tired, one would be surprised at how much gossip occurs; especially from the mouth of Miss Stephanie Crawford. “So Jem received most of his information from Miss Stephanie Crawford, a neighborhood scold, who said she knew the whole thing. According to Miss Stephanie, Boo was sitting in the living room cutting some items from The Maycomb Tribune to paste in his scrapbook. His father entered the room. As Mr. Radley passed by, Boo drove the scissors into his parent’s leg, pulled them out, wiped them on his pants, and resumed his activities” (11). These words may be completely false, for all anyone knows, but the town will believe them with all their hearts and tell anyone they can find. Maycomb County is definitely opposed to being different. It is very segregated and racist, and when Atticus decides to defend a black man in court the public, along with the Finch family members, goes wild. Many of the reactions to Atticus’s actions are taken out on Jem and Scout, which really worries Atticus. “ ‘Grandma says it’s bad enough he lets you all run wild, but now he’s turned out a nigger-lover we’ll never be able to walk the streets of Maycomb agin. He’s ruinin’ the family, that’s what he’s doin’’”(83). Jem and Scout’s own cousin says this to them about Atticus. Whether it’s Boo Radley or the decisions of Atticus Finch, the Maycomb mouths are always running. Maycomb County, Alabama is a very sluggish, very poor, and very gossipy town. Although three adjectives do not scratch the surface of the countless characteristics that contribute to the mood and feel of the story, these are some of the main ones that really hit the nail on the head. Harper Lee does a great job in allowing one to understand the story more clearly by painting a detailed picture of what it would be like to be living during that time.
