6.5 Question 1 Why did Byzantine emperor Leo III forbid the use of icons in 730? How did the pope react to Leo’s order? Answer: Leo III forbid the use of icons in all Christian churches and homes because he believed that the people were worshiping the icons not God or Jesus. Some Christians in the east agreed with Leo’s law. This policy of iconoclasm led to the destruction of many works of roman art. Then the Roman popes got angry at Leo. Pope Gregory III got so mad he even excommunicated the emperor.

6.5 Question 2 What event in 800 increased tension between the east and west? Answer: Another major disagreement happened in 800 C.E.. Empress Irene was ruling the Byzantine Empire at the time. While she was ruling Pope Leo III thought she was not a true leader. He thought this because she was a women. Eventually Leo through her of the throne and decided to crown Charlemagne, the king of the franks, and Leo crowned him Holy Roman Emperor as well. These actions outraged the Byzantine who thought they were the rightful rulers of the Roman Empire.

6.5 Question 3 How did the relationship between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church change in 1054? Answer: The matters between east and west came to a head in 1054. The patriarch of Constantinople wanted to reassert Byzantine control over the churches. He closed all churches how worshiped using western rights. Naturally Pope Leo IX was furious. He sent a cardinal with documents saying that the patriarch was excommunicated. The Patriarch was so made he excommunicated the cardinal. Although this act did nothing for the patriarch had no power for he was excommunicated from the church. After this confrontation the churches split and didn’t resolve the tension until 1964.

In Constantinople there was a rebellion attack that destroyed it. After Justinian I quenched the rebellion, he was determined to rebuild the city. He put huge sums of money into public works.

Justinian made many improvements to the city Justinian made many improvements to the city. Thing like new bridges, roads, public baths, parks, and hospitals. He also built many grand churches.

They also made improvements, such as extending woman's rights. The result of their work was known as Justinian’s code. It was used as a basis for many legal codes in the western world.

What was the relationship between religion and government in the Byzantine Empire? The Byzantine empire viewed the empire as a representation of god. The state religion also united people to one common belief. The Eastern orthodox church played a central role in daily life.

How did the Eastern orthodox church play a central role in the daily life of Byzantines Most people attended church regularly. Religious sacraments gave shape to every stage of the jury for birth to death. Convents cared for poor and sick.
