Questions

Largest increases, 2000 Shreveport 3.5% Lafayette 3.5% Baton Rouge 2.5% Lake Charles 2.5% New Orleans had a decrease of 1.9%

ANSWERS: The largest increases in the 2010 Census are: 1. Lafayette 5% 2. Baton Rouge 3% 3. Shreveport 2% 4. Lake Charles 2% The largest decrease is: 1. New Orleans- -29%

The data we chose told about the minority businesses in Louisiana. We found that as a minority more women were business owners in Louisiana, for the 2000 Census. Indians owned fewer businesses than any other minority. African Americans owned 12.2% of minority businesses in Louisiana. Most of the businesses owned by women are service businesses. They include Salons, Food, and Clothing.

On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina hit Mississippi, and southern Louisiana. This event changed the population for the city of New Orleans and the state for years to come. New Orleans was the largest and hardest hit city. On September 23, 2005 Hurricane Rita also made landfall between Texas and South West Louisiana. The cities of Lafayette and lake Charles were affected by this storm.

The 2000 Census for the State of Louisiana showed an increase in population for the state by 5.9%. The 2010 U.S. Census states that the population for all Louisiana is down by 1.9%. New Orleans was the city with the largest decrease in population. Due to Katrina, it decreased by 29%.

I used a bar graph to show the differences in the population. I chose the bar graph, because when trying to measure change over time, bar graphs are best when the changes are larger. I learned that natural disasters can have a major affect on not just a few people, but on everyone. It can affect a person, family, town, city, and even a state. From my bar chart you can see how much of a difference the storm changed the population in New Orleans. New Orleans and the State are still adjusting financially.
