Winter Summary Winter – Average weather conditions Winter 2009/10 – Severe conditions resulting in National salt shortage Last winter (2010/11) – Extreme conditions with exceptionally heavy snow fall, followed by prolonged low temperatures Additional resource was brought in on a reactionary basis The six point plan and participation in the MART We therefore need to ensure we are ready for the challenge!

Innovative Service Delivery – Season Innovation is doing something differently, not necessarily inventing something new! Transport Scotland have introduced the following: Raiko Ice Breakers New additional weather stations and cameras Enhancements to the existing 3G winter specification including: - Mobile RST sensors - Cat A patrols - Supply of community snow clearing kits - Supply of pedestrian snow blowers - Scenario exercises - Airwave radios installed in all frontline patrol vehicle s -Alternative de icing materials

Innovative Service Delivery – Season In addition to Transport Scotland’s innovations, this season we have taken a pro-active approach at the following key service delivery areas: Community Involvement New and additional plant and machinery Additional Planned Resource Engagement with Local Supply Chain Improved Communications

Hand over of self help kits to Largs Business Improvement District Group

Amey SW Additional Resource for Winter 2011/12 Eight 4CX JCB’s (2 to be stationed at each depot)

Amey SW Additional Resource for Winter 2011/12 Five 4X4 vehicles one based at each depot fitted with ploughing facilities to help staff get to work

Amey SW Additional Resource for Winter 2011/12 Additional winter training has been carried out to ensure more qualified staff available, both our Winter Service Duty Officers and our MART attendees Additional staff employed to cover our Operational Control Room Two Groundhog welfare units to supply hot drinks and toilet facilities in emergencies Enhanced secondary weather warning system introduced into our Control Room Additional Hot Box brought in to help deal with pot holes

Engagement with Local Supply Chain Two UTV utility vehicles from Carl Sanders primarily to clear footpaths but can be used on narrower carriageways Two large 6 wheel drive Foden dump trucks through Drumclog, which will be fitted with a ploughing attachment and can tow large vehicles if required Further availability of labour and plant from our surfacing supplier Aggregate Industries, who have agreed with their owner drivers to fit ‘din plates’ to their vehicles to enable snow ploughs Large capacity tractor fitted with plough from J Findley to enhance the resource in the Dumfries and Galloway area

Partnership Agreements with Local Authorities and other Stakeholders Commitment with South Lanarkshire to enhance communications and supply mutual aid when required Through our existing contract with North Lanarkshire there already exists a close relationship and ability to share resource when possible On-going partnering with Dumfries and Galloway through our existing sub contract We have been working closely with BAA at both Glasgow and Edinburgh airports to help them develop their Snow Plans for the airports We will be supplying Glasgow Airport with additional snow clearing resource and assist them with their overall communications Supply winter training to the Scottish Police Forces at Tulliallan to provide a better understanding of our activities

Enhanced resilience throughout the SW Unit to reduce severe weather risks Overall an additional 21 units employed with further support secured from our partners Improved communications and partnering with Local Authorities and other stakeholders With more than a decades experience in winter service delivery, we are better prepared than ever before Conclusion
