Prison Health in NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde A health needs assessment 2012 Dr Gillian Penrice Consultant public health medicine “Offenders and ex-offenders should have access to the health and other public services they need and benefit from the same quality of service as the rest of the population” [Scottish Government, 2008]

November Prison health care transfers from SPS to NHS what is the state of prisoner health? what services are being delivered? how are services being delivered? where are the gaps in services? Baseline to inform future planning & development of services

Methodology 3 approaches: - Epidemiological Corporate Comparative Prisons in Greater Glasgow and Clyde

Epidemiological Describing the health of the prison population from: - –the available literature; –locally available prescribing data and –point prevalence information from 22nd February 2012 in Greenock.

Corporate Interviews with approx 50 with key stakeholders Prisoners, officers, prison health care staff, third sector organisations Prisoner focus groups in Barlinnie Views and opinions on how are services being delivered – both good and bad
