The Three Branches of Financial Management by Alex Berry

Reasons for Choosing Interest Practicality  Money is everywhere we go. Politics  The Market Crisis, the Budget Crisis, the Euro Crisis. College  Planning ahead for heavy spending.

Financial Management Education Paper Driving Question: What are benefits of implementing and learning financial management in high school? Thesis: Financial management should be nationally implemented as a required primary and secondary course to instill economic awareness, business mathematics, and financial literacy.

Interesting Facts Paper Teenagers, ages 13 to 18, showed to spend an excess of $159 billion in 2005 – more than $20 billion of the entire Texas state budget. The average family has $9,000 in credit card debt, leading the U.S to have the lowest national savings rate among industrialized countries. Average private college and university expenses regarding tuition, fees, room and board charges have increased 51.9 percent from 1990 to 2005

Learning Experience Paper Academics:  Three Branches of Financial Management I discovered:  We are doing something wrong.  There is a way to fix it.  We are working to fix it.

Goal Product Survey  To assess the Financial Management skills of the Junior class. Lecture  To provide aid on a subject, Business Mathematics, that received heavy amounts of questions via the survey. Activity  To test the Junior class's ability to utilize Financial Management skills in a financial scenario.

Survey Product Q: How long will it take to double an investment of $2000 with a fixed- interest rate of 6%? A: 12 years – 26% Q: If you have caused an accident, which type of automobile insurance would cover damage to your own car? A: Collision – 70% Q: Inflation can cause difficulty in many ways. Which group would have the greatest problem during periods of high inflation that last several years? A: Older people living on fixed retirement income - 19%

Activity Product The activity called Villages, based upon Oregon Trail and Monopoly. The game based upon the buying and selling of resources. They each received a slip of paper with a profession, a list of advantages, and a budget. The goal was to win the activity with the most money.

Impact Product On myself:  Introduced to new venues of information  Became familiarized with financing On others:  Introduced the Three Branches of Financial Management  Answered common questions regarding Business Mathematics  Strengthened their perspective with a financial management base Mentor?

Connection Between Paper and Product I researched my own definition of financial management, business mathematics, economic awareness, and financial literacy. Then, I attempted to introduce and teach these topics.

Successes and Challenges SuccessesChallenges I was able to teach my activity several times, and I able to improve on it after each trial. I was unable to reach as large as an audience as I would have preferred. Students responded well to both the lesson and activity. I was unable to administer a final assessment due to time constraints. I was able to help my fellow peers relax.I was unable to fix the activity to be confusion-free. I was able to practice presenting to an audience. Procrastination heavily hampered progression.

Future Plans Application and Lessons Future Application  If not a Swiss banker, then perhaps a penny pincher.  Degree of International Relations: Economy Basics What do I take away from this?  Do not procrastinate.  Know what you are talking about.  Have a plan, and keep up with that plan.
