What is a Fiction Book? Fiction is the way that we define books that are completely made up, or fictional. Fiction is one of the main genres (groupings of book) in the book world. There are many sub-genres (smaller, more specific groupings) of the fiction genre. Sub-genres include: historic fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and many others.

What is a Nonfiction Book? Nonfiction books are books that give facts and cover real world topics. Nonfiction books are a main genre in the book world. Nonfiction books cover an immense group of topics. Nonfiction books can be: biography, dictionary, atlas, encyclopedia, record books. Nonfiction books can provide information on: animals, machines, history, countries, medical topics, poetry, folk tales, religion, and much, much, more.

The Dewy Decimal System The Dewey Decimal system was created by Melvil Dewey (1851-1931) as a way to organize books in the library. Dewey’s system uses ten large topic categories. Each category breaks down into more specific topics, like an outline. The DDS organizes materials so like topics are surrounded by like topics.

The Dewey Groups 000 – General information & works 100 – Philosophy and psychology 200 – Religions 300 – Social sciences 400 – Language 500 – Science 600 – Technology 700 – Arts and recreation 800 – Literature 900 – History, geography, and biography

How the Dewey Decimal System WORKS Exercise One Lets look at how the system works. Lets say we want to find a book about American Football. Sports are found in the 700s. Sports that use a ball are found in the 790s, specifically 796. If we look for Football for Dummies, the DDS number will be 796.33 followed by “LO” the first two letters of the author’s name. Exercise Two Exercise Three 796.33 LO The spine label for this book. Exercise Four
