MATH/ELA ROLLOUT: INSTRUCTIONAL SHIFTS AND SCOPE AND SEQUENCE

OBJECTIVES : Teachers will be able to summarize Math/ELA instructional shifts Teachers will be able to compare instructional shifts to current instructional practices Teachers will be able to develop lesson plan incorporating one instructional shift

ANTICIPATORY SET On note taker sheet: List as many of the Math/ELA shifts you can think of… OR What do you think are some of the Math/ELA instructional shifts with the new curriculum?

SHARE OUT….

JIGSAW Count off in 3s Read assigned Math shift and ELA shift Take notes on note taker Discuss notes and select one person to share out to whole group Summarize each shift on note-taker – everyone writing!

SCOPE AND SEQUENCE

REFLECTION Think about your current lesson plans, what instructional shifts have you already incorporated? What instructional strategies have you used to do this? Explain on note-taker paper.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE Start to: Develop a lesson plan incorporating one instructional shift using scope and sequence as a guide.

EXIT SLIP 1.What shift do you plan to incorporate into your lesson plan? 2.What scope and sequence and target standard are you using as your focus for the lesson plan? 3.What strategies/resources might you use to make the lesson plan come to life?

MATH INSTRUCTIONAL SHIFTS 1. Focus strongly where the Standards focus 2. Coherence: Think across grades, and link to major topics within grades 3. Rigor: In major topics, pursue with equal intensity: conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application

ELA INSTRUCTIONAL SHIFTS 1. Regular practice with complex text and academic language 2. Reading, writing and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational 3. Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction
