4 Strategies to Support Common Core At Home
Presented by: Peter Mercado, WESELPA Program Specialist

5 WESELPA Mission The West End SELPA team works in collaboration with students, parents, school districts and community agencies to maintain communication, provide quality services, and ensure the provision of appropriate resources which support the education of all students with disabilities. Today, as never before, it is essential that parents, students and staff work together to make certain that the appropriate services are provided on an individualized basis for every child with a disability.

6 Common Core: What is it?

7 How do we include all in instruction?
Universal Design for Learning Multiple means of Perception Multiple means of Expression Multiple means of Engagement Multi-Modal How do I See, Hear, Do, Say, and Care?

8 Common Core English Language Arts
Key Shifts Regular practice with complex text and its academic language Reading, writing and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction

9 Activities to Support ELA
Read with your child: Both Fiction & Nonfiction Read aloud as your child reads aloud Ask questions about how things are the same and different Ask them to describe key characters or topics Ask them to show you where in the text they found that information Read more than one version of the same story or topic. Have them describe what is the same and what is different

10 More ELA Support Perseverance is as important
Help your child build reading stamina Start small Take turns reading; assign characters Give incentives Identify tools to overcome obstacles Take short breaks Use finger to track words while reading Place bookmark horizontally under current reading line Use dictionaries online or in word processing software

11 More Tools to Support ELA
Access free books from public libraries Access free digital copies of books from public libraries online Use free text-to-speech readers when you and your child cannot read together Use free speech-to-text software (speech recognition) when generating ideas for writing

12 Common Core: Math Key Shifts Greater focus on fewer topics
Coherence: Linking topics and thinking across grades Rigor: Pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skills and fluency , and application with equal intensity

13 Activities to Support Math
Play games that support math concepts Where in this room can you find a (shape)? What number am I thinking of? Give hints that require calculation. Guess how many ______ are in this jar? Share techniques on how to estimate. Count items and have your child identify who was closest.

14 Strategies to Support Word Problems
Part Whole

15 Part-Part-Whole Supports problem solving to find where you started (X), what changed (Y), or what you end with (Z). X +/- Y = Z Ask questions about the problem before attempting to solve: What are they asking you to find? What would you need to know? Do you have the information to find your answer?

16 Part-Part-Whole Example
Ricky went shopping with $7. When he was done shopping he had $3. How much did Ricky spend? $4

17 Part-Part-Whole Example
Alicia has 2 pet fish in her fish tank. Today is her birthday and her parents gave her 3 more fish. How many fish does Alicia now have in her fish tank? 5 Fish

18 Integrated Activities
Baking from a recipe (with supervision) Have your child read the entire recipe first Have your child summarize the process Ask your child to collect and measure the ingredients For older children, ask them to bake a fractional batch of cookies. “Follow this recipe but cut all the ingredients in half”

19 More Integrated Activities
Some Assembling is Required Have your child read you the instruction and have them carry out the instructions when appropriate

20 More Integrated Activities
For older children, have your child assist you in paying the bills by asking them to find the amount owed and help with the calculations when balancing your checkbook. Create a pie chart of your monthly expenses. Have your child help you create a budget for their birthday party, create a list of items to buy and an action plan of things to do
