Activating Prior Knowledge Students learn and remember new information best when it is linked to relevant prior knowledge. Teachers who link classroom activities and instruction to prior knowledge build on their students’ familiarity with a topic and enable students to connect the curriculum content to their own culture and experience (Beyer, 1991) . ©The English Learner Group, 2011

Building Background Knowledge Children from language-rich homes where ideas are discussed and curiosity about the world is encouraged develop a basic understanding of concepts important to academic achievement (Marzano, 2004). ©The English Learner Group, 2011
