Air Quality (or, where’d that building go?) Holli Riebeek Frank Niepold Ana Prados Katie Stofer Kevin Ward Tamara Shapiro Ledley

Data Used In situ visibility assessment incl. cloud cover, weather (ground) EPA Airnow Air Quality Index (ground) MODIS True Color (satellite) MODIS Aerosol Optical Depth (satellite)

Visibility Observations Observers designate a normally (clear day) visible landmark for reference Record standard weather, time, location data Determine sky color on qualitative scale Determine visibility of landmark, photograph Determine cloud cover percentage Repeat over time and/or space

Satellite Activity Level I (Intro): Qualitative assessment of MODIS True Color image for correlation of cloud or haze cover with in situ visibility, qualitative (color only) air quality index Level II: Quantitative comparison of AOD correlated to visibility, numerical air quality – both PM 2.5 and ozone Both repeated over time for trend analysis Compare with other users for spatial trends Steps beyond: pyranometer, then sun photometer
