German-Chinese Workshop on Waste Management; HD, 8 th of May 2007 © IUWA / Sterr 2007 What is an Eco-Industrial Park? An industrial park is a large geographical area containing businesses of an industrial nature which all have access to utilities and common services on the estate. Characteristic to industrial parks is also a master plan according to which the parks are developed and park management who is responsible for the long-term development of the park. (UNEP 2001) “An eco-industrial park is a community of manufacturing and service businesses located together on a common property. Member businesses seek enhanced environmental, economic and social performance through collaboration in managing environmental and resource issues. By working together, the community of businesses seeks a collective benefit that is greater than the sum of individual benefits each company would realize by only optimizing its individual performance.” (Lowe 2001) © Salonen 2006
