Quaestio: Does Alexander deserve the title “the great”? Nunc Agenda: Clear everything off your desk. Quiz!

I. Macedonia Attacks Greece A. Macedonia was a powerful kingdom that lay north of Greece. B. After training a vast army, Philip began taking over the Greek city-states. C. The Macedonians defeated the Greeks at the Chaeronea. After this battle, Philip controlled all of Greece.

II. Alexander Builds an Empire A. Philip’s son, Alexander ( BCE), inherited a strong kingdom. B. He won his first victory against the Persians at the Granicus River. C. Through his conquests he established a large and powerful empire.

Alexander was carried by his beloved horse Bucephalus into many battles.

The Phalanx Used as a brute-force breakthrough formation. Philip made the Phalanx a versatile weapon, with the ability to advance, hold and retreat in good order. It was primarily used as a holding force while the Companion cavalry delivered the main blow against the enemy.
