American Pacific Nursing Leaders Council Presented at PIHOA 51 st Meeting Nov 14, 2011 Honolulu, Hi

Role Provide leadership in setting standards and training in identification of health risk as it relates to NCD (Childhood obesity).

Response to NCD – Communicate and update our membership on ongoing activities and responses made with each jurisdictions. – Provide assistance in identifying appropriate resources for NCD.

Contribution – Actions & Strategies A. “Adopt a Child” B. Roadmap  Assists in setting standards for NCD using CDC guidelines.  Assists in identifying clinical and competency standards for NCD.  Training and retraining such as collaboration with educational system.

 Facilitate media promotion, traditional leaders, NGO’s, faith based organization.  Provide information and education on lifestyle changes regarding health risk such as nutrition and exercise.  Include NCD as a priority in DRAFT strategic plan.

Requirements for Success A. In General: 1.Set minimum standards – To determine what standards to follow (CDC- childhood obesity, BMI) – Policy 2. Facilitate training of nurses regarding standards 3. Collaboration with other organizations such as PIHOA, PBMA, NPEHA, PCDC, PPTFI, PIPCA, traditional leaders, NGO, policy makers.

Resources needed: 1.To explore CDC standards 2.Financial assistance to realize implementation 3.Full endorsement and support from Health Ministers and other partners to bring APNLC to the table. Requirements for Success (Cont.)

Recommendations Strengthen strategic responses by: 1.Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration with other organizations such as PIHOA, PBMA, NPEHA, PCDC, PPTFI, PIPCA, traditional leaders, NGO, educational institutions and policy makers. 2.Provide financial support for the success of the program. 3.Consider training and retraining needs. Other issues: *Must recognize the importance of the nurses role and to support their endeavor.
