Second Corinthians Chapters 1-7

When did Paul write it?

1 st Corinthians was written on Paul's 3 rd missionary journey A.D. 56 most likely in the spring. 2 nd Corinthians was written the same year as 1 st Corinthians most likely in the fall.

Where Did he write it from?

After difficulties in Ephesus (Acts 20:1) Paul headed out to Macedonia. After preaching and teaching throughout that region Paul went to Greece. 3 months later the Jews in the area plotted against him so Paul went back to Macedonia. Paul stopped in Troas and preached the gospel (Acts 20: 7-12). Afterwards he moved around Macedonia teaching and meeting in different cities keeping an eye out for Titus. After meeting up with Titus and receiving the information brought he made time to write a response back to what was going on. Tradition holds that it was written while in Philipi.

Who did he write it to?

To the church of Corinth. Specifically those who had any doubts over Paul’s authority as an apostle.

Why did Paul write it?

The purpose of writing again to the Corinthians was primarily defend his ministry. There where groups in Corinth that had twisted things he had said previously to try and dissuade the church there to accept Paul’s authority as an apostle of Christ. Through this factions had formed that had divided the Church and they needed to reconcile themselves to each other. In addition he gave instruction concerning the repentant offender and the collection for the poor saints in Jerusalem.
