Building Strong Library Associations | Regional Convenings Mandiaye Ndiaye University librarian IFLA French Language Center Assistant DAKAR / SENEGAL IFLA/AFLIA BSLA Regional convening at Kumasi_Ghana February 2014 Involving new generation

Building Strong Library Associations | Regional Convenings Intergenerational culture in Associations! How to involve new generation?

Building Strong Library Associations | Regional Convenings WHAT I WILL NOT DO : Make a presentation WHAT I WAS SUPPOSED TO DO : Share knowledge or experience on a topic WHAT I WILL DO THEN? Shake ideas, ask questions and broaden my horizon seeking professional development on a topic

Building Strong Library Associations | Regional Convenings Yes, I'll will share! …but questions, and seek to enrich my answers with you An Association is a community... It is a family A special family because it has a vision and a code of conduct. This kind of family will not need energy to give substance to its vision? Association?

Building Strong Library Associations | Regional Convenings An association is irrigated in its dynamic evolution by experience and professional practices of all members...even “special members!” An association is a space of community exchange with sociability, a space of development for all members …is it not also a dream space ? Special members…in a dream space?

Building Strong Library Associations | Regional Convenings A dream can be feasible or infeasible - How about crazy dreams? Experience gained by senior members over time gives them wisdom Boundless energy of young members lead them to crazy dreams and funny methods Dynamism, fun, dreaming, aspiration, energy,… characterize young members and make them special members. We know!

Building Strong Library Associations | Regional Convenings How to put fun with serious in the same dynamic? How to take into account the effect of fashion and global trends in something structured, reflected ? wisdom + fun + dream + dynamics + trends= ? How to put together different needs from different community members in the same dynamic? How to integrate special members in the dynamic of management? - Challenges ?

Building Strong Library Associations | Regional Convenings Listen and take into account their dreams : Listening capacity Make them dreaming by reality : Emulation (Pointing champions / Sharing success stories) Coach them to reformulate their dreams with e-tools : Self-initiative Inoculate ‘’THE VIRUS’’ to new generation!

Building Strong Library Associations | Regional Convenings Connect them to other dreamers of the world : Networking & learning (webinars, fellowship programs, grants,…) Encourage them to express and share their dreams by becoming library advocates : Mentoring. Inoculate ‘’THE VIRUS’’ to new generation!
