found object sculpture

Key Concepts Students will, through creating their own sculpture, learn about the concepts and principles behind sculpture created with found objects. Then they will learn about the process of planning for artworks by sketching found objects in a sculptural design and exploring how it could actually be assembled. The students will gain an understanding of found object sculpture and research, write about, and discuss artists that produce found object art. The students will understand the use of materials and what they can symbolize in found object sculpture. Vocabulary Sculpture, Found objects, Recycled/repurposed objects, Assemblage, Balance - symmetrical or a- symmetrical, Line, Color, Shape, Texture, Form, Space, Unity, Emphasis, Contrast, Variety, Rhythm or movement Material adapted from: © Wyoming Arts Assessment Coalition – Found Sculpture – Middle School Visual Art September 2004 Material adapted from:

Marilyn Stevens’ “Happy Words” uses stencils, twine and found objects to suggest that an item’s past can be a part of what makes it interesting now.

Brian Sullivan

Each found object had a story to tell, however when I combine them together strange juxtapositions immerge, creating complex objects far different than their intended purposes. I enjoy playing off the duality of its past life purpose along with its new meaning.

Trina Hesson Rastamama painted recycled wood, metal, found objects 23" x 35" x 19"

This painting was a commission for Hampton Lumber as part of a program called "Corporate Waste Into Art" sponsored by Cracked Pots, an art from recycling organization.

Instead of painting on canvas or flat boards she sliced the ends of 2 x 4’s and 2 x 6’s and used the wooden wafers like mosaic tiles. She sliced the ends of the lumber like you would slice salami to reveal the grain and then glued the “salami” on to a backing board.

She further intensified the patterning by rubbing thin paint into some of the slices. Others she painted with opaque paint.
