The Catcher in the Rye By: Stefi Moye, Sashini Godage, Amanda Araque, Caitlyn Wild, and Korie Almanza

Thesis In The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger, Holden Caulfield’s caring attitude towards young girls demonstrates his yearning to retain the innocence of childhood.

ROLLER SKATING GIRL “She didn’t have any gloves on or anything and her hands were all red and cold“ (118). “She was a very nice, polite kid. God, I love it when a kid's nice and polite when you tighten their skates for them or something” (119). Her red hands relate back to Holden’s hunting hat, Phoebe, and Allie.

JANE Jane is a metaphor for consistency and simplicity: “She wouldn’t move any of her kings. What she’d do, when she’d get a king, she wouldn’t move it” (31). Holden is stuck in the past and has great fear of change: “I started toying with the idea...of giving old Jane a buzz…the only reason I didn’t do it was because I wasn’t in the right mood” (63). Holden only remembers Jane as a sweet, little girl, but deep down knows she has probably lost her innocence.

PHOEBE One of the few people Holden cares for Character foil for Holden: “All right, name something else. Name something you’d like to be. Like a scientist. Or a lawyer or something” (172). Symbol Allusion to Greek mythology “She always listens when you tell her something. And the funny part is she knows, half the time, what the hell you’re talking about. She really does” (218).

CONCLUSION Holden demonstrates his longing to maintain a life of eternal childhood by acting kindly and thoughtfully towards the young girls of the novel.
