Salinger, an American author born in 1919 Genre: literary realism / coming of age story Set in New York in the 1950s narrated by sixteen-year-old Holden Caulfield (from a psychiatric facility a few months after the events of the novel) just been expelled for academic failure leaves school two days early to explore New York before returning home major conflict: Holden’s conflict with himself wants to connect with other people on an adult level, while part of him wants to reject the adult world
