Sunnyvale Leaders propose staffing cuts and service reductions at Fire Station 6 (North of US101 – East of Fair Oaks) June 4, 2011

Station 6 currently has 2 fire apparatus, each with 2 firefighters. If one of the firefighters is off on leave they plan to have only one 3-person fire apparatus in the entire district. This will be a common occurrence. Station 6 covers all of Lakewood Village and many mobile home communities. If the one remaining fire apparatus is on a call the next apparatus comes from a nearby district with a delayed response. This will often expose residents in that area to potentially dangerous delays in emergency fire response. This would also result in one less apparatus available to respond to any fire event in all of Sunnyvale.

Sunnyvale already has the lowest cost per capita for Police/Fire Services in all of Santa Clara County Data courtesy of the City of Sunnyvale 2011

National Fire Protection Association standards recommend four personnel per apparatus. All other Santa Clara County agencies have 3 or 4 per apparatus Sunnyvale only has two firefighters on each apparatus

That’s a 24% increase in population growth with no corresponding increase in staffing. Sunnyvale’s Fire Staffing has not increased since the early 1980’s.

Three year average from 2001 to 2003 – 4,882 EMS calls Three year average from 2005 to 2008 – 5,628 EMS calls That’s a 15% increase in EMS call volume with no corresponding increase in staffing. Sunnyvale is the 3rd busiest EMS agency in the Santa Clara County system. Sunnyvale is the 2nd busiest agency per fire station in EMS call volume in the county system. 911 EMS Call Volume

How to help Please stay informed and voice your opinion. The budget public hearing will be Tuesday, June 14th at 7pm in the Council Chambers. Come tell the City Council you do not support cuts to core 911 emergency response personnel. Please make a point to contact your elected representative. to Council: Mayor Melinda Hamilton and Councilmembers Christopher Moylan, Otto Lee, Ron Swegles, Anthony Spitaleri, David Whittum and Jim Griffith
