Community Asked to Renew Funding on August 16, 2011 Nearly half of your fire district’s revenue is subject to voters renewing the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) levy and the Fire Benefit Charge (FBC). This revenue is essential in providing a quick response with highly trained paramedic/firefighters. Both of these funding sources are nearing the end of their six- year life. 7. 7 Funding History EMS levy has been in place in the district since 1980 City of Puyallup had EMS levy in place since 1981 FBC has been in place in the District since 1991 FBC has been in place in the City since January 2010

8. Central Pierce Fire & Rescue - 20118 You may ask yourself, why is the fire department on the ballot so frequently? Funding for fire districts was established in the 1930’s so rural communities could provide fire protection (only). Since that time, many areas around the state, including Pierce County, have developed into urban or suburban communities requiring additional resources. The legislature has responded by providing funding sources which must be voter approved such as the EMS levy, FBC, or Excess levies. None of these are permanent sources of funding. Currently, voters must reauthorize this funding every six years.
