Attitudes and Prejudice By Natasha, Hope, Weslie, Ariana, and Bob

Attitude ●Attitude-stable organization of beliefs, feelings, and tendencies toward someone o made of three major components:  evaluative beliefs  feelings  behavior tendencies

Major components: ●Evaluative: A judgement decided logically. o I like pie because it tastes good ●Feelings: An emotion usually associated with a situation or a thing o Pie makes me happy ●Behavior tendencies o The way we typically act; relates to attitude

Attitude Development ●Attitude development is based largely on how an individual was raised and their environment o parental and societal values o media and social pressures  Media heavily influences the formation of attitude in a society, which influences the attitudes of an individual

Attitudes and Behaviors ●Attitude doesn’t always predict a behavior o Some people change behavior and attitude to be appropriate in a situation ●Self monitoring- when people override their behavior in accordance with others expectations o High self monitoring will result in observing situations and other people’s behaviors for clues on how to act o Low self monitoring will result in action on ones own attitudes with great consistency, showing little regard for situational clues and constraints.

Attitudes and Behavior ●LaPierre traveled through the U.S during the 1930s with a chinese couple ●They were refused service at 1 out of 250 hotels and restaurants ●6 months later he sent out a survey- most places claimed they would not serve Chinese. ●Moral of the story: Attitudes are not reliable predictors of actual behavior!

Prejudice and Discrimination ●Prejudice - an attitude that is an unfair, intolerant, or unfavorable view of a group of people. ○Judging people before you get to know them at all. ●Discrimination - to treat a certain group of people unfairly. ○Treating a person differently based on race, culture, beliefs, gender, looks, or the way someone dresses. ○ acting on a prejudice

Types of Prejudice ●Sexism-negative sentiments with regard to females that derive from the belief that females are worth less or less capable, mentally and physically, than males. o Throughout history, women have been thought of as being subordinate to men, often being ignored in areas like the academia or belittled altogether. o

Types of prejudice ●Racism - Prejudice and discrimination directed towards a particular racial group. o In America, African Americans, Asians, Arabs, Native Americans, and Hispanics have all been subject to prejudice and discrimination. o ozP4k ozP4k
