Microbiology Continued

Warm Up 1/30/12 1. Compare and Contrast a plant and animal cell. Which organelles are present in plant cells that are not in animal cells? 2. Which statement is true about the cell theory? a. Most living things are made up of cells. b. Cells are produced by nonliving objects. c. Cells do not perform life-supporting functions. d. Cells make up all living organisms that perform life functions. 3. Which of these statements explain a characteristic of living things? a. Life originates in simple environments. b. Life originates in complex environments. c. Living cells are produced by nonliving cells. d. Living cells are produced by other living cells. 4. Cell function is most dependent on which cell characteristic? a. size b. shape c. color d. structure 5. What is the primary function of the vacuoles in animal cells? a. to release energy b. to provide support c. to store materials d. to transport waste

Announcements If you have not turned in your science fair project, you will have an F s your first 3 rd quarter grade! Remember, that homework is cumulative so it is important to do it and turn it in on time! Protist and Cells Test on Friday! Tutoring will be tomorrow and Wednesday!

Club cell reflection On Friday, each of you acted out a part of the cell. You are going to reflect on how all of the different cell organelles worked together to help the cell function. Be sure to talk about the following: Your job/what you acted out The interactions you had with other organelles How you worked together What would happen if you couldn’t do your job THIS IS LIKE THE LAST PART IF YOUR SKIT 30 minutes

Intro to protists These are described as a diverse group of eukaryotic organisms. Since their eukaryotic, their DNA or genetic material is enclosed in a membrane. Protists live in almost any environment that contains liquid water.

What makes protists special? Some protists are able to photosynthesize, meaning they make their own food. In order to do so they must have chloroplasts. Other protists act more like animal cells and have to get their nutrients from other sources.

Types we will be learning about Ameoba- an animal like protist Paramecium-an animal like protists Volvox- plant like protists. It is also multi-cellular. Euglena- plant like protist.

Protist in real life… We will watch a quick video on protists and answer questions AssetId=3D84751E-23C EE7B64D6&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=DSC

Warm Up 1/31/12 1. Why is your respiratory system important for cellular respiration? 2. Pick a disease we have studied. What system does it affect? How does it affect the body’s ability to maintain homeostasis. 3. Describe how the endocrine system and nervous system are similar. How are they different? 4. Make one connection between the immune and circulatory system.

Announcements Tutoring today! Be sure to tell your parents about touch base with teachers that will take place tomorrow night.

Microscopes Today we will be completing an activity that utilizes microscopes. You are not allowed to horseplay in a science lab. YOU CANNOT PLAY AND BREAK MY MICROSCOPES!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now, I will teach you how to use them

Stations You will either be at a reading station or microscope station. As always, be on your best behavior or receive an alternate assignment

Data Table Use the stations to complete the table below: Protist Name Type of Organism (Unicellular or Multi-cellular) Movement (How does it move? Producer or Consumer? If a consumer, how/what does it eat? Illustration (What does it look like?)

Alternate Assignment

Exit slip 1. ____________________ is a series of tiny, beating, hair-like projections that allow a cell to move? a. cilia b. flagella c. eye spots d. pseudopods 2. Which statement below describes the relationship between flagella and cilia in animal cells? a. They are both structures used in digestion. b. They are both structures used in movement c. They are both structures used in circulation d. They are both structures used in reproduction

Warm Up 2/1/12 1. Compare and Contrast a plant and animal cell. Which organelles are present in plant cells that are not in animal cells? 2. Using your knowledge of cell theory, describe how a lemon could be classified as a living thing but lemonade would not. 3. List the 4 characteristics of Living things. 4. How are uni-cellular and multi-cellular organisms different.

Announcements

How do protists move? Ameoba Paramecium Euglena Volvox As you watch each video clip be sure to note the differences in the way they move!

Protist movement foldable Each of you will receive a copy of the foldable sheet Follow teacher directions to complete the foldable

Protist movement Use your foldable to complete the worksheet This is your independent practice

Exit slip….Blast from the plast

Warm Up Take 10 minutes to silently review for your test!

Pair review

Any questions….. Ask now or forever hold your peace!

Test time!
