1 PROTISTS

2 PROTISTS COMMON EXAMPLES: EUKARYOTIC VERY DIVERSE GROUP
Amoeba, paramecium, euglena EUKARYOTIC Cells have a nucleus VERY DIVERSE GROUP most are unicellular, microscopic, aerobic Some are autotrophic, heterotrophic, sexual, asexual This kingdom is made up of the organisms that do not fit into any other kingdom.

3 PROTISTS Homeostasis Most protists live in a moist environment – therefore they must maintain their water balance or they will not survive. Protists have an organelle called a contractile vacuole that pumps out excess water from the cell.

5 PROTISTS REPRODUCTION Asexual
Many protists reproduce asexually by a parent cell dividing to form two cells SEXUALLY Those protists that reproduce sexually, do so via conjugation – exchange of nuclear material between two individuals

6 PROTISTS Protists are divided into 3 groups:
ANIMAL LIKE PROTISTS = PROTOZOA Classified by method of movement PLANT LIKE PROTISTS = ALGAE Classified by pigment color FUNGUS LIKE PROTISTS = MOLDS Classified by body form

7 PROTISTS PROTOZOA (animal like) Modes of movement Flagella Cillia
Pseudopods

8 PROTISTS Flagella a whip-like tail Usually scavengers or parasites
Some live in the gut of termites (helps termite digest wood) Trypanosoma – parasite of humans in Africa that cause sleeping sickness Notice the whip-like tails – or flagella – that the flagellates use to move through the water.

9 PROTISTS Cilia move using hair-like cilia that beat to help the organisms move through water Includes Paramecium Found in fresh and salt water – contain star shaped contractile vacuoles Usually free-living Video of the paramecium moving with its cilia

10 PARAMECIUM

11 PROTISTS Pseudopods (false feet) that extend from the cell membrane and pull the organism behind. Amoeba Aquatic, clear cytoplasm, irregular shape Move by pseudopods Contain a nucleus, contractile vacuole, food vacuole

12 PROTIST

13 PROTISTS

14 PROTIST PHYLUM EUGLENOPHYTA Euglena and Volvox
Contain contractile vacuole, an eyespot (which is sensitive to light) and chloroplasts (which carry out photosynthesis)

15 Protists
