Living Water Vineyard 5 th Sunday, May 31, 2015 John 3:1-17 New Living Translation

John 3:1-17 NLT 3 There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. 2 After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.”

3 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again,[a] you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” 4 “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”

John 3:1-17 NLT 5 Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.[b] 6 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.[c] 7 So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You[d] must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”

John 3:1-17 NLT 9 “How are these things possible?” Nicodemus asked.10 Jesus replied, “You are a respected Jewish teacher, and yet you don’t understand these things? 11 I assure you, we tell you what we know and have seen, and yet you won’t believe our testimony. 12 But if you don’t believe me when I tell you about earthly things, how can you possibly believe if I tell you about heavenly things?

John 3:1-17 NLT 13 No one has ever gone to heaven and returned. But the Son of Man[e] has come down from heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.[f]

John 3:1-17 NLT 16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave[g] his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.

“It Doesn't Come Naturally” Clear answers and clues Right in front of you Categories neatly organized Don't you wish our faith was like this?

“It Doesn't Come Naturally” Nicodemus Jewish by culture and practice Seeking Jesus and understanding Also a religious teacher but calls Jesus “Rabbi”

“It Doesn't Come Naturally” Nicodemus doing business as a Pharisee Member of governing council Deeply committed to obeying God Admired by common people Believed in bodily resurrection and eternal life Believed that angels and demons existed

“It Doesn't Come Naturally” Nicodemus doing business as a Pharisee Feared public exposure Thought their rules were “God's rules” Had hypocritical attitudes sometimes Focused on appearing to be good

“It Doesn't Come Naturally” Water-Breaking News: “You must be born again.” Nicodemus says, “Huh? What? How?” “Born Again” Modern day meanings Scriptural meanings: “anothen”~ “from above” and “again” or “anew”

“It Doesn't Come Naturally” Can you see and feel the tension here between the well-meaning goal to win souls to Jesus Christ and the dishonoring of culture difference in these statistics? This example shows us that, like Nicodemus, our understanding of being “born again” needs to be born again. Living as Christians in multicultural community is not easy, and it doesn't come naturally. It is a supernatural process and a work of the Holy Spirit that we participate in and allow.

“It Doesn't Come Naturally” Jesus handles burning questions by... Giving indirect answers Using natural examples to describe spiritual mysteries Wind=Greek and Hebrew for ”breath” and “spirit”

“It Doesn't Come Naturally” The Holy Spirit's response to our questions: PATIENTLY teaching us PERSISTENTLY working through our resistance/avoidance LOVINGLY saving us from the destruction that results from darkness You may now enter God's kingdom!
