Interaction Design: Overview Dr. Dania Bilal IS 588 Spring 2008

What is interaction design? Designing interactive products to support people using the products Interdisciplinary field: examples HCI, graphic designers, cognitive psychology, computer science, software engineers Academic disciplines (social science, info. science, etc.) Different backgrounds bring different perspectives into the design

Process Identify needs Gather requirements Develop design alternatives Evaluate Continuous Implement

Key Characteristics Involve users Identify and document usability and user experience goals Iterate design through four steps in design process

Usability Goals Effective Efficient Safe Has good utility Learnable Memorable

User Experience Goals Satisfying Enjoyable Fun Entertaining Helpful Motivating Aesthetically pleasing Support of creativity Rewarding Emotionally fulfilling

Usability Principles Ten principles Jakob Nielsen Heuristics See text and visit Nielsen’s website http://www.useit.com

Design Principles General guidelines for guiding designers in the design process Norman’s Principles Visibility Feedback Constraints physical, logical, cultural

Design Principles Mapping Consistency Affordances Norman’s book: The Design of Everyday Things (1988).
