STORAGE OF CHEMICALS

INVENTORY * Inventory All Chemicals Should include: Chemical name and formula Date received (or put on inventory) Approximate amount of reagent present Storage location Any significant hazards

MANAGEMENT OF CHEMICLAS * Good housekeeping!!!! * Storage area neat and orderly * Keep inventory updated * Ordering chemicals: Should be centralized Assess needs, safety issues / hazards Maintain up to date MSDS file

Properties of Storage Area * Secured and locked when not in use (self-locking) * Two exits * Secured shelving Wood preferred ( or plastic, metal) with lip on edge is recommended Not above eye-level Only store bottles 2-3 deep * Proper emergency equipment

Where to Store Chemicals?? * Not under hood unless properly designed and locked * Not in the hood * Not under the sink Need a Designated Storage Area Separate form the Student Lab !!

STORAGE ARRANGEMENT Not Everything in Alphabetical Order !!! Organize Chemicals By Compatible Groups !! * In separate rooms or different shelf locations within the same room. * In designated storage cabinets.

General Classes By Compatibility Flammables Acids Bases Oxidizers Water Reactive Chemicals Extremely Toxic / Poisonous Chemicals Peroxide-Forming Chemicals
