Biological and Chemical Storage Bio Sciences: Chemicals

Bellwork What two (2) dates should always be on a biological sample label? Property of CTE Joint Venture

Objectives 1. Identify Biological storage container used in a stock room 2. List the two (2) main categories of chemicals 3. List subcategories of chemicals and where those groups should be stored in a stock room 4. Design a proper biological and chemical stock room set up Property of CTE Joint Venture

Terminology Inorganic: Any substance in which two or more chemical elements generally other than carbon are combined. Organic: Generally any member of a large class of compounds whose molecules contain carbon. Property of CTE Joint Venture

The Grocery Store Think of a super market or a grocery store. With your partner, list five (5) ways the store has items organized and why. Property of CTE Joint Venture

The Grocery Store and The Stock Room Just like a grocery store, biological and chemical supply rooms are organized according to the type of “product”, or in the case of a stock room by type of biological/ chemical based on categories. Property of CTE Joint Venture

Biological Storage in Stock Room Usually need to be stored in a refrigerator or freezer. MAKE SURE ITEMS ARE LABELED CORRECTLY Short-term storage: Refrigerator Should be between 2°C and -4°C Long-term: Freezer Either -20°C or -80°C Liquid Nitrogen: -210 °C Property of CTE Joint Venture

Chemical Storage in Stock Room Generally organized by category: Inorganic: Any substance in which two or more chemical elements generally other than carbon are combined. Organic: Generally any member of a large class of compounds whose molecules contain carbon. Each category has subcategories as well. But above all else, items must be stored in clearly and properly labeled closed and intact containers. Property of CTE Joint Venture

Chemical Storage Subcategories Flammables Oxidizers Reducers Concentrated Acids Concentrated Bases Property of CTE Joint Venture Water Reactive Peroxides Gas Cylinders Biological Poisons What is the difference between biologicals and chemicals?

Chemical Storage in Stock Room We will use an adapted suggested chemical storage scheme from Flinn Scientific for high school chemical stock room set ups. In short -The set up is designed to not only categorized chemicals (NOT by alphabetical order) but to also separate them based on reactivity. Property of CTE Joint Venture

Chemical Storage of Inorganics Not to worry if you are not familiar with they types of chemicals, you will learn about some of them as the year progresses. What is important is that you can use this sheet to help you identify where a chemical should be stored based on the information given on the label. Property of CTE Joint Venture

Chemical Storage of Inorganics cont. Let’s take a look at inorganic. First, is what you will find on a shelf, where no special cabinets or refrigeration is needed. Property of CTE Joint Venture With your partner, find what category permanganates and nitrate are in.

Chemical Storage of Inorganics: Acids All acid, especially concentrated, should be stored in a dedicated acid cabinet, ventilated is best. Some organic acids may be stored here. Ex. acetic acid Property of CTE Joint Venture NEVER store nitric acid (HNO 3 ) with other acid. Nitric acid should be stored by itself.

Chemical Storage of Organics Now let’s take a look at organics. First, is what you will find on a shelf, no special cabinets or refrigeration needed. Property of CTE Joint Venture With your partner, find what category Amines and Amino Acids are grouped in.

Chemical Storage of Organics: Flammables Like the word says, they will catch on fire; therefore, they should be stored in a special cabinet that meets NFTP and OSHA standards – basically it should be able help minimize the risk of a fire starting. Property of CTE Joint Venture Refrigerated flammables should ONLY be stored in a special flammables refrigerator.

Chemical Storage of Organics: Poisons Some laboratory experiments require the use of dangerous poisons. These should always be stored in a locked cabinet. Property of CTE Joint Venture If the label says “Poisonous”- it probably is a poison. Recall: Think-Pair-Share, what the six means on the white poison MSDS diamond.

Biological and Chemical Gas Cylinders Compressed gas cylinder and aerosols are used in many laboratory experiments. Property of CTE Joint Venture Need to be stored up right position and secured with a chain in their own section of the stock room. Some biological aerosols may need to be stored in a refrigerate – check labels!

Your Stock Room With your partner you will use your “ Biological and Chemical Storage” and the “My Stock Room Set Up” to design a proper biological and chemical stock room. Read all instructions before you begin to cut and glue. Before the period is over, you need to have completed the set up and labeling. Be prepared to share with the class. Property of CTE Joint Venture

Closure Summarizes, in 12 words or less, the most important aspects of the days lesson. Property of CTE Joint Venture
