Where is the digestive system located?  The digestive system is a bunch of organs located all throughout abdomen.

Major Functions of the Digestive System  Digestive system starts in your mouth  Food goes down a tube called the esophagus to the stomach  food enters the stomach where it is mixed with acid  Food goes to the small intestine (where more chemicals are added to the food)  Food travels to the large intestine ( were all the chemicals are taken away from the food, and it absorbs into the blood cells)  Waste leaves body through the anus

Diagram of the Digestive system

Major organs(mouth)  Digestive system starts in your mouth  Your teeth help chew the food into little particles  your saliva moistens the food enough to swallow

Major Organs(esophagus)  Food goes down the esophagus  A long tube that forces the food into your stomach

Major Organs(stomach)  Stomach is a sack like organ  Soaks the food in a acid called chyme that helps your food digest  Size of your fist

Major organs(small intestine)  Food goes to duodenum(the first part of your small intestine), then the jejunum( the part of the small intestine),finally to the ileum(the end)  bile, pancreatic enzymes (chemicals) help the food break down even more

Major organs(large intestine)  Food finally goes to large intestine  Water, electrolytes, and chemicals are taken out of food  Bacteria is added  Nutrients that are needed absorbs into the blood cells  Body gets food

Major organs(exiting)  Waste(left over food not needed) exits the body through the anus

Teamwork with the systems  Digestive system breaks down food so the circulatory system can absorb the food into blood cells and feed the whole body  After digestive system and circulatory system have fed the whole body, excretory system helps the waste not needed exit your body

Teamwork with the systems (continued)  If the digestive system broke down, the circulatory system would have no food to absorb, and body would get hungry and weak  The excretory system would have no leftover waste to dispose(it pretty much would be useless)

Diseases in the digestive system  Celiac disease- damages lining in the small intestine and prevents body from absorbing nutrients that is needed  Crohn’s disease-inflammatory of your intestine caused by bowel buildup

Ways to keep The digestive system healthy  Eating vegetables and fruits helps your digestive system by keeping your stomach from having problems  Make sure you drink a lot of water because it is the main thing that helps your digestive system

Fun Facts  Your stomach is as big as your fist  Your mouth produces about 1.7 liters of saliva every day  Your small intestine is nearly 20 feet long  Your large intestine is actually way smaller than your small intestine

Questions  What’s one way to keep your digestive system healthy?  What part of your body helps the waste exit your body?  Where is the digestive system located?
