A Summary of State DOT GIS Activities Presented at the 2005 AASHTO GIS-T Symposium Lincoln, NE

Information Sources survey of state DOT GIS managers 41 State DOTs (and PR) responded in 2005 Significant revision to survey questions Several new questions added: Certification of GIS staff Other geo-data maintained by agency Maintenance of milepost markers Greatest benefits & costs of GIS technology

2005 Survey Responses

GIS Deployment in the DOT

Location of GIS Unit

GIS Staff Time Allocation

GIS Staffing & Contracting Slight increase reported in GIS core staffing (Average 7.4 per agency). GIS certification is not important factor in hiring/advancement of GIS staff. DOTs outsource about 39% of GIS work. Average GIS contract budget is about $325,000 per year per agency

Current GIS Software Mix

Primary GIS Software

Base Map Scales

Road Network Coverage

Other Geo-Spatial Data

Geo-Spatial Data Sources

Highway Mile Markers

Benefits & Costs of GIS

Current GIS Staff Activities Core Functions Develop web applications (26) Data warehouse / Enterprise GIS (21) Base map maintenance / updates (11) Location referencing (10)

Current GIS Staff Activities Other Activities Software / hardware migration (11) Business systems integration (11) GPS data collection / integration (7) Map Production / Publication (7) Integrate Imagery data with GIS (6) Engineering / CAD data integration (5)

Current GIS Applications Road Inventory Management (12) Safety / Crash Analysis (11) Traveler Advisory / Information (8) Strategic Planning / Needs (7) ITS / Traffic Management (6) Realty / ROW Management (6)

Current GIS Applications Environment / Cultural Mitigation (5) Asset Management (4) Truck Routing / Permitting (3) Emergency Management / Homeland Security (3) Federal Reporting (3) Bridge Management (3)

GIS Activities: Summary Web-based applications continue to be major activity areas. Enterprise data integration expanding to include imagery, CAD, and GPS. Increasing emphasis on integrating business systems, not just data. End user applications growing, but not high priority for GIS core staff.
