ElementElement A pure substance made of only one kind of matter The Periodic Table lists all the known elements

chemical symbols. Elements are pure substances that are represented by chemical symbols. Some elements are represented by one letter Can you find elements in your periodic table that are represented by one letter? Others are represented by two letters. Can you find elements in your periodic table that are represented by TWO letters?

Some elements can have ONE letter to represent it. Sometimes, symbols on the periodic table can be tricky! Elements can sound different than the letter that represents it. Any guesses on what element this is? Like the kind that’s found in bananas!! Hydrogen! That’s easy

MoleculeMolecule A particle of matter in which one or more elements are joined tightly together. Elements can be the same or different to make a molecule. Oxygen Hydrogen What is the name for this abundant molecule on Earth?

CompoundCompound A substance whose molecules contain matter from two or more elements NaCl What do you use this compound for in life?

Two ELEMENTS can chemically combine and create a COMPOUND! O OXYGEN Sometimes one element can have two letters, so don’t get confused! Hint: each element will have at least one capital letter
