The word "accident" is used in day-to-day language quite often. In Health & Safety it has a specific meaning. In Health & Safety we define an accident as: An unplanned event that may, or may not, result in injury or damage to property. A NEAR MISS (an accident where people escape injury) is also included in this definition. What is an Accident? The word "accident" is used in day-to-day language quite often. In Health & Safety it has a specific meaning. In Health & Safety we define an accident as: An unplanned event that may, or may not, result in injury or damage to property. A NEAR MISS (an accident where people escape injury) is also included in this definition. Accident Causes ALL accidents are the result of HUMAN FAILURES, by acts or omissions. Of these accidents, it is calculated that 70% of them are preventable. People cause accidents by a number of different methods, these include: Lack of knowledge Careless attitudes Horse-play / practical jokes Working without authority Poor / defective tools or equipment Lack of ability Taking short-cuts Not following policy or procedure

Factors Despite all of these things just mentioned, we, as people, do not usually choose to cause an accident. Along with the things listed on the previous page, there are personal factors which can affect our behaviour. These can include: Complacency / over-eargerness Disinterest Illness / fatigue Boredom Distraction Worry SEPT - MANDATORY TRAINING Cost to the Trust When an accident occurs and a staff member is injured, many areas can be affected. The staff member may be in pain, have temporary loss of movement in a limb, require surgery. This can all entail time off work, and could affect earnings, which impacts on personal and family situations. There can also be a cost to the Trust. These costs can vary depending on the person who is affected and the length of time they are off work. Costs to the Trust can include: Loss of a skilled colleague Service delays Employment of temporary / agency staff Loss of profit - injured worker Damage to equipment Effects on morale Summary It is people who cause accidents: unplanned events which may, or may not, lead to injury or property damage. People are affected by the events happening around them and how they are feeling, including whether they are tired, ill, interested, or have authority. The Trust, as-well-as colleagues, can be affected by accidents which happen to others. The Trust can only be proactive in health & safety if you report ALL accidents.
