Digitization of mathematical editions in Serbia Žarko Mijajlović 1 Zoran Ognjanović 2 Aleksandar Pejović 3

Introduction Project’s concerns are digitization of:  Mathematics-related books, thesis and manuscripts  Mathematical journals Project’s goals are:  Forming digital archives and databases  Presenting digitized materials freely via Internet

Retro-digitization (1) Criteria for retro-digitization:  Books and manuscripts selected for digitization should be related with mathematical sciences: mathematics, mechanics, astronomy, physics, mathematical geography etc  Books considered for digitization had to be published before certain date in the past. We have chosen for this date the beginning of the Second World War (1941)  Preference will be given to Serbian authors, or to written works related in some way to the area of Balkan

Retro-digitization (2) More than 100 books, thesis and manuscripts have been digitized:  Vasilije Damjanović, Aritmetika, Venice, 1767  Jovan Došenović, Čislenica, Budim, 1809  Dimitrije Denić, Conforme abbildung des eliptishen paraboloids auf die ebene, Inaguaral dissertation der Philosoph. Fakultaet zu Jena, printed in Belgrade, 1885

Mathematical journals Retro-digitization started with:  Publications de l’Institut Mathematique  Publications of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Series Mathematics and Physics Today we have Internet presentation of freely accessible full-text mathematical journals

Technological aspects of the project (1) Addressed issues:  Rules for choosing material to be digitized  Information retrieval  Metadata and rules for handling them  Distribution of information using Internet  Ability to search electronic files efficiently  Proper choice of data format and resolution

Technological aspects of the project (2) Our retro-digitization process:  Scanning document pages Gray-scale mode, 300 dpi  Processing scanned pages Impurities cleaning, contrast improving  Storing processed pages Tiff format, LZW compression  Collecting processed pages PDF and/or DjVu

Technological aspects of the project (3) Types of metadata:  Descriptive obey librarian standards  Structural  Administrative resolution, rate of compression

Technological aspects of the project (4) Used technologies:  UTF-8 encoding  MySQL database server  JAVA  PHP  Apache web server

Conclusion Project is still a work in progress Future goals are:  Unifying already digitized materials  Adding new journals  Continuing with retro-digitization  Enlarging the database with journals from region

Digitized mathematical resources Virtual library of old mathematical works:   eLibrary of mathematical journals:  Retro-digitized journal Publications de l’Institut Mathmatique:  Retro-digitized journal Publications of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering:  Visual Mathematics: 
