My Values and Beliefs

Characteristics of Exemplary Leadership  Work independently at an area around the room.  Read the statements in your envelope.  Place them in the order of importance as a leader (top- most important, bottom- less important)

Leadership Kouzes and Posner  Model the Way Find your voice by clarifying your personal values. Set the example by aligning actions with shared values.  Inspire a Shared Vision Envision the future by imagining exciting and ennobling activities. Enlist others in a common vision by appealing to shared aspirations.  Challenge the Process Search for opportunities by seeking innovative ways to change, grow and improve. Experiment and take risks by constantly generating small wins and learning from mistakes.  Enable Others to Act Foster collaboration by promoting cooperative goals and building trust. Strengthen others by sharing power and discretion.  Encourage the Heart Recognize contributions by showing appreciation for individual excellence. Celebrate the values and victories by creating a spirit of community. The Five Practices and Ten Commitments of Exemplary Leadership – Kouzes and Posner

Reflected on ourselves as leaders  Which “commitment” is the one you feel most consistent in as a leader?  Which “commitment” do you find most difficult to demonstrate consistently as a leader?  Which commitment are you most committed to working on as a leader?  Did anything on the list surprise you? If so, what?  Which commitment is not on the list that you think should be added?

How might you you use the the 10 Commitments of Leadership with your staff?

Whom do you trust?  Which of the following group do you trust the most? The least?  Car dealers  Corporate executives  Doctors  Police Officers  Lawyers  Fire Fighters  Politicians  Teachers  Why might this be?

What is trust? What builds trust?  What is trust? How do you describe it?  What builds trust? What can you do to ensure trust exists?

My Leadership Values  Select your top Leadership Value (Front – Big Letters)  Think about where you got this from.( Front – small letters)  How will you show others that these values are important to you? (Back of note card)

Scenario  You are the new Assistant principal at Howard School. You notice in your first few weeks, that a paraeducator routinely comes in 30 minutes before the official start of the work day. However, she frequently leaves with the kids when the busses leave. One day in October, you over hear other members of the school staff discussing how they feel it is unfair that the paraeducator leaves before contractual hours almost everyday. What are the steps you would take to resolve this problem?
