Getting the most out of your transfer station

1. Electronic Waste Collection 2. Green Waste 3. Recycling CRV Material 4. Scrap Metal Disposal 5. Mulching Program 6. Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection  E-Waste, HHW, and recycling should all go inside the transfer station.  Green waste and scrap metal should have a designated area outside the transfer station  All these efforts will help reduce solid waste cost as it will decrease the amount of tonnage in your waste stream  It will also allow more room for regular household rubbish

 What is electronic waste? Washers & dryers, televisions, refrigerators, old VHS or DVD players, CD and radio players  Most waste haulers will not allow you to simply throw them away  Many times you will find old TV’s, refrigerators, washers, and dryers littered throughout the Reservation or sitting in a persons yard  Educate Tribal residents on what is considered E- waste and why it is dangerous to illegally dump in the environment

 Set up a centralized or multiple drop off areas for electronic waste  Set up an area in your transfer station, it does not take up much space  Put signs up in the transfer station showing the designated drop off area  Research to find a company in your area that will remove E-Waste free of charge  Find out what E-Waste they will and will not take  Contact local electronic stores (Best Buy or Fry’s) to see if they have E- Waste collection days  Look for other grants to pay for the removal of E-Waste (Best Buy)

WEBSITE: PICK UP FORM

 Start small and work your way up  Try to roll it out to any Tribally owned and operated business  Offer recycling bins at Tribal gatherings

 Pick an area in your transfer station for CRV materials  Secure the area with fencing to eliminate theft  Scales to weigh the materials  A bailer to compact the materials  The California Department of Conservation (CDC) is the agency you apply to for a CRV license  Their website (CDC) has a lot of material for download on recycling  The CDC also has CRV grants available  Must allow CDC officials to come onto the Reservation to check your scales

 Waste haulers will not allow you to throw green waste (tree trimmings) into their dumpsters and most landfills will not take it  Most people burn their green waste, which could lead to a wildfire and causes air pollution  People just let it pile up in their yard or throw it down into canyons

 Wood chippings can be used for erosion control around homes and on dirt roads  Best way to start is to purchase a small chipper  The BIA has a wood chipper that it loans out to tribes  Just create a designated area for drop off of green waste  Chip up the green waste as needed  Leave it easily accessible for residents to pick up and use  Could also use the wood chippings to create mulch and landscaping

 This can be an expensive item to collect  Educate people on what exactly HHW is?  Training your staff should attend: CPR, HAZWOPR, etc.  Educate your staff and Tribal residents about the dangers of HHW  Many rules and regulations for HHW  No waste hauler will accept HHW material  Do not attempt to haul HHW on your own

 Have a designated area for scrap metal  All scrap metal has a value  Scrap metal companies will provide drop off and pick up of 40-yard roll offs  Anything that is metal or mostly metal can be recycled and loaded into the bins such as refrigerators, washers and dryers  Some will even take cars

 Start one in your office and lunch room with left over food scraps and coffee grinds  One of a casinos largest waste items is food, try to get them involved  A mulching program is a great teaching tool, try to get your tribes after school program involved  A market exists for clean mulch  Many different methods to create mulch, find out what is best for you  Mulch can be used for planting projects, gardens and landscaping  Reduces the amount of waste you have haul to the landfill
