IPV6 IMPLEMENTATION IN IITK CAMPUS NETWORK Deepak Sharma Network Engineer Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur Kanpur (INDIA

IPv6 in IITK Campus Network  The following IPv6 prefixes have been assigned to ERNET by APNIC: 2001:0E30::/32  All PoPs have been assigned IPv6 addresses according to the current global unicast addressing scheme by, Hinden R., O'Dell M., Deering S.: An IPv6 Aggregatable Global Unicast Address Format RFC 2374, IETF 1998.[RFC2374] And Blanchet M.:A flexible method for managing the assignment of bits of an IPv6 address block draft-ietf-ipngwg- ipaddressassign-02, IETF 2001.

IPv6 in IITK Campus Network  According to the scheme the end-user organizations that have a need to create subnets should obtain /48 prefixes.  Based on the these IIT Kanpur PoP has been assigned 2001:0E30:1400::/40 and it can further assign /48 to it’s customers.  Hence IIT Kanpur got 2001:e30:1401::/48

2001:E30:1401:4::/642001:E30:1401:2::/642001:E30:1401:1::/642001:E30:1401:5::/64 ERNET Delhi CSE NetCC Net Academic Net Hostel Net IPv6 Proxy ERNET ROUTER CC Backbone R O U T E R IPv6 DNS & Mail

IPv6 in IITK Campus Network  The IIT Kanpur Network has been enabled to support IPv6.  The backbone router provides IPv6 address and other network parameters using auto- configuration.  Users who have enabled their machine to support IPv6 are being provided extra Internet bandwidth through ERNET.

IPv6 in IITK Campus Network  Internet access to IPv6 users is provided through a IPv6 Proxy Server.  IPv6 Proxy Server is an Apache Server with Mod_Proxy enabled.  HTTP traffic between client browsers and the IPv6 Proxy server flows on IPv6.  HTTP traffic from IPv6 Proxy server to Internet flows on IPv4.  There are more than 500 users who are using Internet access through IPv6.
