Report on the Commemoration of the 140 th Anniversary of the 1868 Earthquake Tom Brocher Chair 1868 Hayward Earthquake Alliance

Commemoration of the 140th Anniversary of the 1868 Hayward Earthquake Mission San Jose, Fremont October 21st, 2008 The past five earthquakes on the southern Hayward Fault have been 140 years apart on average. Are YOU prepared for a repeat of the powerful 1868 earthquake? USGS Suzette Kimball, Historian Richard Schwartz, Dolores Ferenz, Curator Andrew Galvan, Fremont Mayor Bob Wasserman, a representative for State Senator Ellen Corbett, Red Cross Bay Area Chapter CEO Harold Brooks Several descendants of 1868 quake survivors were present

1868alliance.org School Earthquake Drills Over 200,000 students participated Corporate participants included Intel and East Bay MUD

Strong media interest in the school drills

Responses from School Participants (21 responses): 95% would like to participate in an annual earthquake drill 90% practiced their evacuation drill 88% practiced other aspects of their emergency drills Most elementary schools used the Quake Ready video

Responses from School Participants: The "group" drill process helped us remember to do the drill, get information out to our community, and was just generally helpful. These sorts of drills offer additional practice, with the urgency of a state-wide initiative. This was an opportunity for our site to practice an Earthquake drill with several other schools statewide. I would love to have the National Children’s Theater develop an assembly to support Earthquake Preparedness at home and school.

Responses from participating schools: We conducted a full scale evacuation drill with search and rescue, first aid, emergency operations, student supervision, extended emergency, student release teams practicing their responsibilities in the event of a major disaster. We tried coordinating with the school that shares our campus and learned that our all call P A systems does not work while the other school is using it. This was a very important discovery that was missed in other drills as we used bells for those. This was the first time we used a new set of evacuation routes, as well as the first time we used a new primary evacuation area. We did an earthquake drill combined with a student release practice.

Sponsored by the City and County of San Francisco, Department of Emergency Management Pushed by the Mayor of San Francisco Corporate participants included: AAA, Bank of America, Barclays Global Investors, British Consulate, Wells Fargo Bank, SFSU

Silver Sentinel Earthquake Preparedness Drill Oracle Global Volunteer Days: Bay Area Earthquake Drill with American Red Cross The Bay Area will conduct on earthquake drill based on a Hayward earthquake of 6.9 magnitude that will mark the 140 year anniversary of the last Hayward earthquake. This drill has been named "Silver Sentinel" and will take place on Thurs Oct 23 from 9am to 3pm. The exercise will commence at 36 hours post- quake. The Regional Emergency Operation Center and the Emergency Operation Centers from all the Operation Areas in the Bay Area are expected to participate, along with the Emergency Operation Centers for a number of cities, other entities such as East Bay Municipal Utility District, BART, Caltrans, [the Port of Oakland], and numerous chapters of the American Red Cross.

Today, more than 20 Belvedere and Tiburon staff members participated in a table-top exercise on the anniversary of the 1868 Hayward Quake. The exercise was designed to learn about new Emergency Operations Center (EOC) technologies and to discuss issues surrounding communication, personnel and resources in the aftermath of a significant event. October (Palo Alto, California) -- The Palo Alto Area Chapter of the American Red Cross today participated in the "Silver Sentinel" disaster exercise held throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, coordinated by the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services. The scenario presented was a multi- day emergency response to a major earthquake on the Hayward Fault. The city’s top management spent two days last week planning how Los Altos should respond to a widespread disaster, and then conducted a dry run to test the plan. After training in their respective roles, city staffers gathered Aug. 28 to walk through their response to a magnitude 6.9 earthquake on the Hayward Fault. Silver Sentinel Preparedness Drill
