Gerunds and Gerund phrases A gerund is a verb form that ends in “ing” and is used as a noun in a sentence. It can be used as: An indirect object A subject A direct object An object of the preposition A predicate noun

Exercising builds strength and endurance. Subject: Exercising builds strength and endurance. Direct object: Some people enjoy exercising. Object of the preposition: What are the benefits of exercising? Predicate noun: My favorite activity is exercising.

Exercising daily is a good habit. A gerund phrase is a group of words that includes a gerund and other words that completes its meaning. subject Exercising daily is a good habit. Direct object Many people enjoy exercising on a bike. Object of the preposition Tell me something about exercising the body.

Many people enjoy running. Find the gerunds, gerund phrases and what part of sentence they take. Many people enjoy running. Exercising this way can be good for your health. Jogging may be a better word for what most runners do. Most joggers enjoy running all year long. They must be careful about dressing properly for the weather.

Getting some exercise every day is important A common exercise for people of all ages is biking. According to many mothers, the best exercise for their children is cleaning their rooms. My family’s getting ready to go on a trip was a huge task. Willie’s favorite pastimes include sleeping and sleeping. I am thinking of retiring next year.
