A Gift From Fadil: A Package Engineering Story Kendall Scales ETES- Hill 15 October 2014

What was the Book About? A family, young brother and sister, attending a wedding. The sister becomes upset of the bride moving away from them. To keep it off her mind, her brother prompts her to find a gift to give and wrap it nicely. She picks a flower but is at a loss of how to wrap it effectively.

How does this Relate to Engineering? One of their family members is a packaging engineer. She helps them develop a design that effectively packs the plant to look like the plant as well as keep it alive during transport. They learn that packaging has a lot more components than they originally thought, and that it even involves the use of engineering.

Try It! After reading the book, it prompts you to try to make your own package. The directions are to design a package that both effectively packs your gift as well as exemplifying the gift based on the design on the outside of the package. “Design the package so it’s a perfect match for the present inside!”

Materials Cardboard Glue/Tape Scissors Markers/Paint A gift to package Ruler

Mine!

Rationale I chose to make my design made perfect for my package by recreating my gift on the box, so people know what is inside the box without opening it. The physical gift, the coffee cup, will be packaged with tissue paper wrapped around it, with Styrofoam made to fit snug around it. This will ensure the gift will stay safe through travel.

Engineering Process Ask- My gift is fragile, so I had to figure out how to keep it safe during travel. Imagine- I knew there had to be something that would help the ceramic not break if it were to get hit or dropped. Plan- I decided to go with a cardboard box with Styrofoam on the inside. For my plan, I thought of how to most efficiently create the Styrofoam to keep the cup completely safe. Create- I decided to make a top and bottom with the Styrofoam that the cup will fit into. Improve- I made the cut outs fit better in the box, and I also made something to go around the outside of the handle the would be closest to the box.
