THE EGG PROJECT “ THE EGG- licopter” BY: Christian Cortina Jose Eduardo Brache 8th Grade Science Project Oct. 3rd, 2016 Miss Bautista- Sang

2 ABSTRACT Hypothesis: We are trying to build a device to protect an egg from breaking after we let it fall from a third floor drop. We believe by using materials to reduce the risk of breaking the egg we can let it drop and it would remain intact. Methods: We wanted to create a type of cushion to protect the egg from breaking without hiding it from viewers. We built a ¨parachute¨ to lower the speed of the drop of the egg and use a Styrofoam cup to act as a shock absorber. Conclusion: After several tries we were able to prove our design worked and we proved THAT with the correct use of materials, objectS falling because of gravity can be protected from damage anD this design can be applied in everyday situations like car crashes, etc.….

3 INTRODUCTION Can an egg dropped from 10 meters without breaking?
The answer we wanted to give to this question is yes, and for that we needed to get rid of the reasons for the egg to break. Why does the egg break? Gravity: Is the natural force that causes things to fall toward the earth. Gravity force : By definitions this is the weight of the object. COLLISION: When two objects bumped into each other is called collision Impact: Two hit something with great force. Crash: too undergo sudden damage or destruction. These are some of the problems we wanted to solve with our experiment. FRAGILE: EASILY BROKEN, DELICATE.

4 INTRODUCTION We know that all the objects of earth are directed downward and we now that the egg is fragile by nature. The problem was very clear, we needed to protect the egg from crashing. WE DECIDED TO MAKE A parachute TO make THE EGG fall slowly without breaking AND THEN TRY THE FALL FROM DIFERENT HEIGHTS TO SEE IF THE EGG COULD SURVIVE. WE RESEARCHED WAYS TO CUSHION THE FALL OF THE EGG LIKE using materials from the list given to us AND THEN DECIDED TO USE a Styrofoam cup AS a SHOCK ABSORBER and a balloon to lower the speed of the fall.

5 PURPOSE THE PURPOSE OF OUR EXPERIMENT IS TO CREATE A SAFETY DEVICE TO BE USED TO PROTECT SOMEONE OR SOMETHING FROM A POSSIBLE BREAKAGE DURING A DROP. WE KNOW THAT THESE EXPERIMENTS CAN BE LATER USED TO PROTECT US IN DAILY LIFE, FOR EXAMPLE: CAR SEATS, SEATS IN A ROLLER COASTER, STROLLERS FOR BABIES, IN OTHER WORDS, THINGS TO BE USED SO THAT IF SOMETHING HAPPENS THE PERSON OR THINGS INSIDE MAY SURVIVE.. IN SHORT WORDS THIS COULD BE THE BEGINNING FOR A PROTECTIVE DEVICE FOR THE WHOLE WORLD.

6 PROBLEM AND HYPOTHESIS
THE PROBLEM WE ARE TRYING TO SOLVE IS IF AN EGG CAN SURVIVE A THREE STORY FALL WITH A DEVICE THAT CAN PROTECT IT AND IS NOT HEAVY AND AT LEAST ¼ OF THE EGG MUST BE SEEN IN THE DROP. OUR HYPOTHESIS IS IF WE MAKE A DEVICE THAT CAN HOLD THE EGG WITHOUT CRUSHING IT, THEN THE EGG WILL SURVIVE THE FALL BECAUSE OF THE resistance created from the balloon AND THE CUSHION FROM THE Styrofoam cup.

7 THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Why do balloons float in air?  There are three reasons:  1. The balloons could be filled with a gas lighter than air; such as helium or hydrogen.   2. The balloons could contain hot air (the most frequent method of floating recreational people-carrying balloons). Hot air expands, and is therefore lighter than the surrounding air.   3. The balloons might be filled with ordinary air (such as that you breathe to fill small balloons). The air within the balloons will be the same density as the surrounding air; but the weight of the balloon material makes the whole thing slowly sink in still air. However, it is not all that much more dense than air; and slight air currents (such as you blowing from beneath) might keep the balloon aloft for a while.

8 THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
How do Parachutes Work? A parachute is a device used to slow down an object that is falling towards the ground. There are two forces acting on the falling person: Gravity (Upwards) Air resistance (Downwards) Without a parachute, the gravity is more than air resistance. However, as the parachute opens, the air resistance increases. Now, air resistance is more than gravity. This slows down the parachute and the person can land safely on the ground.

9 LIST OF MATERIALS EGG Styrofoam cup balloon String Paper plate Straws
Shredded paper KNIFE/SCISSORS tape

10 METHOD AND PROCEDURE We brainstormed ideas.
Watched the list of materials that we could use. Designed a possible solution with the materials we were allowed to use. We cut a plastic bottle so the egg could fit in. We filled the plastic bottle with ripped paper and newspaper. Placed the egg inside the bottle covered with the paper. We attached two paper plates with strings in both ends of the bottle. We attached the balloon to the top end of the plate. We put a Styrofoam cup at the bottom of the bottle. We tested the project from a lower height and it was successful. We tested the project original height and it was successful.

11 METHOD AND PROCEDURE HOW LONG DID EACH EXPERIMENT TAKE?
THE FIRST TRY TOOK 45 MINUTES. THE SECOND TRY AROUND FASTER THAN THE FIRST ONE. THE LAST ONE TOOK 20 MINUTES. BRAND NAMES OF EACH PARTICULAR DEVICE YOU USED: ENDY EGGS, string, Styrofoam cup, party balloon, party express paper plate, bond paper, newspaper sheet.

12 METHOD AND PROCEDURE When and where DID the research take place?
DURING THE week and WEEKEND AT Christian’s house. What THE CONTROLS WERE FOR EACH EXPERIMENT? WE CHOOSE A plastic cup THE EGG’S PROTECTION. WE USED a Styrofoam cup AS SHOCK ABSORBER. We put straws on the plastic cup to protect it from the fall. We filled the cup with ripped paper to protect the egg from impact. WE TESTED THE PROJECT WITH LOWER HIGHTS.

13 Data and observation The making of the “egg-licopter”
We thought of a parachute and a helicopter to create our device We used the materials to help the landing of the egg and keep it from crashing., the straws help protect the cup when the device fell.

14 DATA AND OBSERVATIONS We used the plates as wings and the cup as the leg of the egg-licopter. The balloon is the parachute of the project. The plastic bottle is the cockpit.

15 We tested from different heights and it worked.
DATA AND OBSERVATIONS We tested from different heights and it worked.

16 We decorated our project and named it
DATA AND OBSERVATIONS We decorated our project and named it “the egg-licopter”

17 ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSION
In this project we found out that we can make an egg survive a three story fall. It wasn’t impossible as we thought it was. To do this we used a cushion to protect the egg inside the bottle, we used some straws to protect the fall and a balloon as a parachute. We did several tries to complete this project it wasn’t easy. We liked it a lot this project because we got to build things, got to be in groups and make something fragile survive a fall. etc…….
