Ballads  A ballad is a special type of narrative that tells a dramatic story, which often speaks of love, death, the supernatural or a combination of these, through simple narration or dialogue.

Ballads Common characteristics of a ballad:  Short compared to other narrative poems  Written in simple, concise language  Opens abruptly, dropping the reader immediately into the action of the story without a prolonged introduction  Emphasizes a single dramatic event through dialogue and action  Descriptions of character and setting are kept to a minimum  Almost always has a refrain
