Our Solar System

Earth is just one of many bodies in Our Solar System. Our Solar System is Made up of the Sun and all of the objects that orbit around it.

The objects that orbit the sun include, but are not limited to, the eight planets and their moons, the stars, asteroids, and comets.

The Solar System is broken up into the inner and outer solar system. Separating the two parts is the asteroid belt. The asteroid belt occupies the orbit between Mars and Jupiter. It is composed mainly of rocky and metallic non-volatile minerals.

The Planets

The inner planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The inner planets have solid, rocky crusts and are referred to as the “rocky” planets. They also have extremely hot to warm temperatures because they are close to the Sun.

The outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The outer planets are know as the “gas giants.” All of the outer planets have many moons.

The farther a planet is from the Sun, the longer it takes for the planet to orbit the Sun. The length of time it takes for a planet to make one complete orbit around the sun, is the length of that planets year. Earth’s year = 365 Days Neptune’s year = 60,190 Days

The different looks of the moon are known as phases. The moon has 8 phases, the new moon, waning crescent, third quarter, waning gibbous, full moon, waxing gibbous, first quarter, and waxing crescent. These phases are due to the amount of light, from the sun, that is hitting the moon at a given time.

Use the diagram to help understand the different phases of out moon.

Comets are like “dirty snowballs”. They are made up of rock, dust, and ice. When comets come near the Sun, they reflect the light and can be seen in the sky. We can see Halley’s comet every 76 years.

Meteors are space rock that burn in outer space. Meteors are also known as shooting stars. Although most meteors burn up before ever touching ground, some do make it into a planet’s atmosphere creating craters on the planet’s surface. When a meteor hits ground, it is then known as a meteorite

Constellations are patterns of stars that appear in the sky. Scientists have named more than 88 constellations. The constellation most popular in our sky is known as the Big Dipper.
