Our Story I need Volunteers to play…. Isaac Rebekah Jacob Esau

Our story starts out in Genesis 27:1 Our story today starts with a man named Isaac who was very, very old. Isaac was so old that he couldn’t see. He relied on touch, smell, and sound to tell who he was even talking to.

Isaac’s two sons, Esau and Jacob, knew that Isaac was getting old and probably wouldn’t live much longer. During that time, something interesting happened in a family before a father died. The father would give a special blessing to just ONE of his sons. The blessing would always go to the oldest. This was called a Birthright.

Now, Esau and Jacob were twins, but even with twins someone had to be born first. And Esau was the oldest. What’s more, even though they were twins, Esau and Jacob were very different from each other. Esau was rough and hairy, and he was an outdoors-type of guy. Jacob was smooth-skinned and liked staying inside.

As our story begins, Isaac wanted to give Esau, his oldest son his blessing, but he asked Esau to do something first. Esau loved hunting and was really good at it. Isaac told Esau to go out hunting, get some meat, cook a delicious stew, and bring it to him to eat. After Isaac had eaten the food, he would give Esau the blessing.

Rebekah, heard the plan. Now, Rebekah, the boys’ Mother, wanted Jacob to get the blessing instead of Isaac. In order for that to happen, she would need to help Jacob trick his father. And she had a plan to do just that. She would have to make Isaac think that Jacob was Esau! After Esau went out to hunt, she called Jacob to her. She told Jacob her plan. Pretty Devious, RIGHT?

Rebekah took fur from animals and covered Jacob’s smooth skin so that he would feel hairy like Esau. But that isn’t all. She also got Esau’s clothes and put them on Jacob so that he would smell like Esau. Then when the meal was ready, she sent Jacob in to trick his father.

When Jacob went to his father and said he was Esau, Isaac seemed surprised that Esau was back so soon. ‘Who are you?’ Isaac asked. ‘I’m your oldest son, Esau.’ Isaac made Jacob come close so he could touch him to see if he was hairy like Esau. But that didn’t do it either. One thing finally convinced him. Jacob lied

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow Genesis 27:1-45 It wasn’t until Jacob leaned in very close to Isaac so that he could smell him that he was convinced. Jacob was wearing Esau’s clothes, so he smelled like Esau. Isaac finally believed the lie and gave the blessing to Jacob.”

Esau finally got home from hunting. Imagine how excited he must have been as he prepared the food for his father and carried it in to see him. Esau went in and told his father to sit up, eat his food, and give him his blessing. Isaac was confused and so upset that he began to shake. Isaac told Esau that he had already given the blessing to someone who had already brought him food. They both knew who it was— Jacob! Esau was so upset that he begged and cried for Isaac to bless him too, but the blessing—the special blessing—could only be given once and Jacob had taken it.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow Genesis 27:1-45 Esau was so hurt by what happened that he vowed to kill Jacob as soon as Isaac died. Rebekah was hurt because she had to help Jacob run away from home and go to a far country and live away from his family where she would not see him for a long time. Even though Jacob got the blessing he wanted, everything else in his life was lost and messed up. No one was happy, and everyone was hurt.
